What is "inexpensive" to you? What tie of year are you going and how many people do you need lodging for?

I seldom use Rick's lists anymore. They represent only a fraction of available options. Instead, try a booking service like Booking.com or an apartment service like VRBO.com, Homeaway.com, etc. This allows you to see some available options all at once instead of having to contact multiple properties one at a time.

Yes, Laurel is correct on both counts, but we need to know what you consider 'inexpensive." You might be happier with an apartment as they're usually much less expensive. I'd hate not to be able to sleep in Venice and walk around after the cruise ships and day trippers left. If there's any way you can find a place in your pricerange within Venice, by all means, do it.

I agree, stay in Venice if you can. Locanda San Marcuolo is very near a vaporetto stop, quiet area. Check it and others on booking.com or some other booking site.

Depending on how many nights you will be in Venice, an apartment might be less expensive than a hotel. I stayed in a two bedroom apartment in October that started at 79 euros per night. There are some apartments that will allow renters for as little as three nights. If you are interested, I can send you more information.

Do a search on Venere.com or Booking.com and see what is available on your dates of travel.
Apartments are cheaper but probably not worth the trouble if you are staying only a couple of nights.
Venice and inexpensive rarely appear together in the same sentence, so don't expect luxury if you want to spend less.

My wife and I stayed at Ai Tagliapietra B&B last May. At that time the rate was 100 Euro per night which is inexpensive for Venice. It is a 5 minute walk from both the Rialto Bridge and San Marco Square.

I've stayed at Hotel Bernardi a couple times (double, bath down the hall) for around 70 euro a night.

While its not fancy, we found it adequate and its a reasonably convenient location. The owners seem quite nice and were helpful with a few questions I had.

We stayed at Hotel Florida in 2012. Right next to train station and a vaporetto stop. No elevator but some rooms have en-suite baths (and the ones down the hall are OK too) Good breakfast, friendly staff.

https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/1683211 Near Sant'Aponal church.

We also stayed at this lovely apartment when we went to Venice last year (when I couldn't book Al Campaniel).
Her prices are about $150 Canadian, so prob about $120 US. Quiet, cool, nice big bedroom, kitchen facilities, washing machine (which I could not figure out how to use). And less then a 10 min walk to Rialto (prob more like 5 min once you get your bearings). Banco San Marco in the square with a cash machine, few restaurants in the square (I enjoyed All Amarone Wine Bar...http://www.allamarone.com/) and a small grocery store also nearby!

The Hotel Doni is a few hundred meters from San Marco, on the quiet side canal. In October 2013, I paid €90 for a single room, en suite, with a basic breakfast. They also have less expensive rooms with a shared bath; I would be less likely to choose one of those rooms – the shared bathrooms were older, while the en suite room had a very new bathroom.. The location is amazing, and the owner was so kind and helpful when I had a problem. The building is old and quirky, but clean. I really like it. I have stayed there a couple of times.

We haven't been on our trip yet (going in Sept) but I booked an apt through Air B&B and it looks fabulous. We are two couples and it averages E100 per night per couple which I thought was quite reasonable. I checked the hotel where we stayed on a RS tour in 2010 and it would have been E200-300 a night per room. There were quite a few options depending on size, price, and location on Air B&B. Good Luck!

I stayed at "Bed & Venice" which was around 100 euro per night as I recall. It is pretty spartan, but clean and the location is superb, just off Piazza San Marco and convenient to the vaporetto.

Tooz, La Serenissima is a nice central, family-run hotel sometimes used by RS Tours. In between San Marco and Rialto, busy area with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. Older building, the single room I stayed in was small but very cozy and comfortable, with a small en suite bathroom.. Great breakfast included, starring homemade fresh baked goods. I just checked rates for mid-September, just as an example, and they had rooms on booking.com at about 100 to 143 euros per night. It is a popular hotel, so book early. Some hotels offer lower rates if you book and pay in advance on a non-refundable basis. Of course to save a modest amount you give up your flexibility to change your plans. Also, some will give a discount for paying in cash, staying several nights, etc, but you generally need to arrange that with the lodging before you finalize your reservation.

I Had your dilemma as well, I did not want to pay the high prices inside of Venice for seemingly not that great of a hotel, I booked outside of Venice at Marc Anthony palace hotel, extremely reasonable price but then I realized that training into Venice daily was not ideal and that we would not achieve the feel of Venice.... I cancelled the hotel and booked thru airbnb. First time using them and was nervous but the hosts have been very responsive and they had alot of good reviews. I was told by friends who used airbnb, to pick places with lots of reviews and you will be fine. Alternatively, Dolo, also outside of Venice seems cheaper, and there you get that quaint, charming atmosphere. ...
best of luck, wish you a great trip...

Tooz, be sure to confirm the location of the place that website recommends. My bet is they'll put you somewhere on the mainland, and not necessarily with easy access to Venice itself (i.e. the historic center).

Tooz,

If you want an basic but inexpensive room, I'd also suggest looking at Albergo Doni. It's really close to a Vaporetto stop and the rooms are clean, but certainly not posh. Venice tends to be a bit on the expensive side, so if you want cheap accommodations in a good area for sightseeing, it's a good option. The single room doesn't have a bathroom, but as I recall it does have a sink.

Hi, location really is #1 when you're in Venice. Check out booking.com, expedia, or similar. Put in your price range to filter. Then from the map, look to see how close you can find a place near San Marco radiating outwards from that location.

Venice is one of the destinations where we were seldom in our room; there's just so much to do - morning, afternoon & evening. You'll want to be near everything on that section of the islands, especially in the evening & early morning when Venice is so magical.

Also, there are ways to cut some other expenses - we stayed at a place that provided breakfast, stopped in at the grocery store for our lunches, and had a reasonable dinner outdoors in the evenings. Most of our events were free in Venice other than the Accadamia, San Marco upstairs, & going to Murano.....and of course, fabulous gelato! : )
