You can take regional trains easily to all of those places, and there is no benefit to booking them early. They do not sell out, and they are the same price at the last minute as they are ahead of time. You could take faster trains like Frecciarossa that might save you some time, but you would have to book them ahead of time to get a good price on them, and you would be locking yourself into a set time and day. Take the regional trains if you want to be completely flexible.

For Padua there are two fast regional (RV) trains per hour that take the same time as the expensive Freccia trains.

For Vicenza there's one fast regional (RV) train per hour that takes essentially the same time as the expensive Freccia trains. You'd want to avoid the regular regionals if possible; they take an extra 30 minutes--74 min. vs. 44 min.

For Verona there's at least one fast regional (RV) train per hour that takes only 8 to 16 minutes longer than the expensive Freccia trains. Avoid the regular regionals; they cost an extra hour in travel time.

For Bologna choosing one of the hourly fast regional (RV) trains will cost you an extra 33-35 minutes of travel time but could save you over 20 euros if you don't buy the ticket in advance. You'll need to think about what your time is worth. Avoid the departures that are RV + Freccia combinations. They may not be much faster than going the whole way on an RV, but you'll pay the inflated Freccia price anyway.

Hello tkoltoniak,

As others have said in a couple of cases the fast trains are better options weighing price and schedule flexibility. Those are decisions only you can make on whether an extra hour is worth the extra ticket price.

Since you are planning on taking the regionale trains I would recommend getting and using the Trenitalia app to check train schedules, track trains and buy tickets skipping the lines at the ticket machines in the station.

Venice is hard to leave but those cities are all worth visiting.

Have a great trip,
