Planning to drive from Ticino to Venice in January. What would be a good overnight stop as it takes about 8 hours? Also, I know it will be cold and gray but looking forward to Venice in winter with no crowds. Any suggestions for my visit? Hotel, restaurants, artisan trips.
Where are you starting from in the Ticino? I know Lugano is quite close to Italy, but ViaMichelin estimates the drive from that city to Venice at about 4 hours.
The driving route proposed by ViaMichelin takes you past Bergamo, which has a very atmospheric historic district on top of a hill (possibly windy in winter??). There's some sort of funicular up to the top of the hill; you'd need to research the parking situation ahead of time.
Then as you get closer to Venice you pass near Verona, Vicenza and Padua--all very worthwhile destinations. I suspect dealing with a car would be easier in Vicenza than Padua; the latter just felt bigger and more hectic. I can't comment on Verona.
The drive is less than 4 hours, maybe 4.5 if you stay as far as Airolo.
The freeway goes by several interesting cities: Milan, Bergamo, Verona, Vicenza, Padua. Verona would be my top choice, but all are worth a stop. You don't need to stay an overnight however. The overall drive is not that long.
We love Venice in winter. In fact it is our favorite time to visit there. Try Ca'Angeli for lodging. Small, quiet, on the Grand Canal. 24 hour desk, good breakfast, charming.
We also find Venice a great place to dine, contrary to some opinions. Even after 8 trips there we make new discoveries every time. Some to try: La Promessi Sposi, NoNo Risorto, Alla Palanca (lunch only), Ai Artisti, La Zucca, Rosa Salva & Tonolo for pastries. This list has been a source of inspiration.
