Venice in December?

Our family will be visiting Florence and Rome in December and have 3 unscheduled days to fill. Should we add Venice this time of year? Other suggestions? We are not skiers and prefer to avoid snow.

Second that. The light that time of year is just beautiful, and it wasn’t nearly as crowded. I loved it very much.

We have been several times in December and enjoyed it. Dec 8 the lights for Christmas come on and it is magical. Without the cruise ships, it is fairly quiet. Yes, it can be cold so have your puffy coats as well as boots and gloves.

The responses made me want to go too - Venice is one of my very favorite cities in the world. So I took a quick look at the weather there for the past 3 Decembers (timeanddate.com). The temps don't look bad - mostly in the 40s and lows not below freezing, not a lot of rain, BUT the humidity is often 90% or more. When it's in the 40s and that damp it can feel much colder than temps in the low 30's with low humidity. But it's Venice, so I'm still thinking about it :-).

YES!

We LOVE Venice in December. We live here and winter in Venice is the best because it's not unbearably hot and crowded. The lights twinkle on the canals, the mornings have a beautiful mist, and it feels like a real Italian city. Also, you don't have to spend time waiting in lines for vaporetti, museums, or landmarks.

Yes, it can be cold (but we've been many times - with and without kids), and I've never regretted going. Make sure you have a warm jacket and scarf and warm, water-resistant shoes.

Enjoy!

Advice from someone who has lived in Minnesota for 44 years (me): when it's cold and humid, avoid wearing cotton because it gets damp and stays damp.

All three cities are wonderful in December --- I would take any degree of cold to escape the crowds and heat in the big three.

Definitely. I was in Venice last December and found it wonderful--not crowded and the weather was cool (well, cold for me) but beautiful.

We spent Christmas there a couple of years ago and it was less crowded but cold and damp and gray. We have been several times, but probably wouldn't do it again at that time.
