venice in 3 weeks already booked

We already have reservations booked for Venice in 3 weeks. Should I be worried with the recent flooding & damage done?

Things are difficult in Venice for the time being.
Several hotels have been flooded specially in the Centre near the San Marco Duomo and also near the laguna. It is a real catastrophe for Venice and all Italy is speaking about it.
I would certainly check with the hotels booked if they will be able to welcome you by that time.
Also I doubt that San Marco Duomo will be accessible.
Some museums also have been hit. So yes check before going.

I am booked to visit Venice, in 2 weeks time. I am also wondering what to do. My airbnb has contacted me to say their place is flooded so I can't stay there. Am wondering whether to make another booking on higher ground? If anyone has advice it would be greatly appreciated.

This is not difficult, folks. There is a disaster in Venice. Visiting a disaster area is both not smart and somewhat morbid. I would make other plans. From a news report: "Tourists lugging heavy suitcases waded in thigh-high galoshes or barefoot through the submerged alleys, as water taxi and gondola drivers baled sewage-tainted water out of their trashed vessels." Gee, sounds like fun, eh?

I'd cancel any reservation and book in a nearby location.

Agree, you just don’t go. And hopefully, you have travel insurance.

I think you need to speak to/email your accomodation provider and take their lead.

Where I live, following a devastating natural disaster, there was, quite quickly, very much a focus on letting tourists know that we were 'open for business' . So many locals rely on tourists for their livelihoods and it's not always great if people are encouraged to stay away.

A disaster that's been happening very November, for 1,200 years... it was an high tide not a tropical tornado!

The idea of cancelling reservations from next week on, when the moon won't be full anymore, is ridiculous. Last year Venice was up and running again in 5 days. Contact your hotels and ask them what to do.

Current webcams show no water in San Marco Square with people walking around and gondolas parker ready for customers. The short term challenge is going to be the access to some of the sites that may still be mopping up interiors and assessing damage.
You can opt for staying on the mainland (Padua) and training in to Venice. Walk the neighbourhoods in the more central areas of the districts, checkmout Murano and Burano (lagoon islands). And visit the muesums and sites that aren't immediately in San Marco Square or the shore line. I did a quick check on the Peggy Guggenheim Museum website. It is closed this weekend for cleanup, butmopens Monday with their special Venetian's Week.
I am not trying to downplay the current extraordinary flooding, but it was extraordinary.....ordinary flooding happens every November, and aqua alta seasons. The people get warnings, there are apps to tell you what and when to expect it. For them it isn't new.

Be sure to check your hotel's cancellation policies if your stay is very soon and you've decided to go elsewhere? Every accommodation's policies are different so, water or not, if your booked hotel is open and operating, it's possible not to be able to cancel without penalty. Heck, if the city is also reasonably operational at the time you cancel, I'm not sure even trip insurance will cover you. It probably depends on the policy.

check in with Sebastian and Valeria at https://veneziaautentica.com/ They can advise you with up to the minute status and were really helpful to me when I was in Venice last October/November during the extremely high acqua alta. Lots of the businesses have facebook pages and are keeping them updated regularly.

Hello,

We stayed in a little town just outside of Venice called Treviso. If your accommodations does not work out I would highly suggest this little town. We stayed in an AMAZING Airbnb. Wonderful food options and an easy short train ride into Venice... I agree, I would not cancel!

I should add that personally I would not cancel my visit if I had a trip planned for anytime after November 28. That being said, I am very familiar with Venice having visited several times over the past 12 years; I feel comfortable there; I don't have any mobility problems. What I would not do is stay somewhere outside of Venice and day trip only. The tide rises and lowers twice daily so I would want my place to retreat to if needed during a high tide if acqua alta happens. ,
IF you can't cancel your flights, there are loads of other places of interest that you can get to easy enough from the VCE airport.
Lastly, if you do cancel, please consider donating to a recovery fund for Venice. Lots of people need to have repairs done and replace home items such as appliances, beds, and electrical. Feel free to PM me if you would like the name of the GoFundMe that I am choosing to support.

We visited last year in December, and there was acqua alta and flooding at the same time in November last year. Everything was completely back to normal in December and it definitely was not necessary to cancel. I understand this year's flooding is worse but agree strongly with the advice above to reach out to the place that you are staying and find out if they have damage that won't be resolved by the time of your visit ... If the place to stay is ok, I would go in a heartbeat, Venice is a joy to walk around and the water is already receding per the notes above about San Marco.
Enjoy your trip!

Underwoods, if you want the advice of someone who lives in Venice, feel free to email Igor at [email protected]. He said it was okay to share his email here for anyone who has questions. When I asked specifically about tourists arriving in the next 2-3 weeks, he said he expects that by December 1 there should be no problems. I hope that helps in your trip planning.
