Venice hotels please

We will be in Venice 2 nights before boarding a ship. Any ideas of good hotels that are authentic, reasonable and close for walking to everything
near St. Marks square.

Hotel Ala - I've stayed here every year for several years. It cannot be beat!

We stayed in one of RS's suggestions - Hotel Al Piave. It's quiet and close to St. Marks and serves a great breakfast. It's family owned, and they're all very friendly and speak English fluently enough to answer any question we had. When we return, we'll try to book there first. Have a great trip.

Venice is very compact and St. Mark's is reasonably close to the middle of it, so there are LOTS of places that are within easy walking distance of it. We like Pensione Guerrato, near the Rialto Bridge.

My husband and I once got stranded in Venice when our train arrived late and we missed the last vaparetto to where we were staying. We turned around and there was the hotel Savoia and Jolanda. We were exhausted and didn't know what else to do at 1 in the morning, so we walked in and they had a room. After the porter ped our bags in our room he very dramatically opened the French doors onto the small balcony and we were FLOORED by the view. It was like something from a movie!! Directly in front of us was the gorgeous San Giorgio Maggiore island with the church lit up, all the lights around the lagoon reflecting on the water, and the warm breeze blowing into our room. Probably the most magical hotel stay we've had in Europe as far as atmosphere and "postcard" worthiness go. I put on the hotel robe and just sat on the balcony with my mouth hanging open not even believing where I was sitting. Overly dramatic maybe, but truly, it was fantastic and I will never forget it. That said...you have to be open to a little over-the-top Italian cheesiness but that's part of the fun of the place. The location couldn't be better and it makes it easy to see everything you want to see in Venice. Check out the map of the location.... http://www.hotelsavoiajolanda.com/piantaA4.pdf
Enjoy your trip!

Best Windows, with very Venecian decor. Located in the clock tower at Piazza San Marco. Web site pictures are very accurate. You actually check in at a hotel several blocks away.
