We stayed at Allogi Alla Scala, which wasn't exactly romantic but well priced with an amazing location! It was in Rick's Italy book.

When I was looking for a Venice hotel, multiple websites, including the hotel websites indicated that there we no rooms available. But I emailed them anyway and received responses from several that they actually did have a room available. So, if there is hotel(s) that you are really interested in staying at, try an email directly to the hotel. I heard back from everyone within one day. You might get a pleasant surprise! Good luck.

We just stayed at a B and B called Casa Gottardi. It is owned by a sweet woman named Susanna, who serves an amazing breakfast which is delivered to your room each morning. It is just around the corner from the Rialto bridge. Great location and very clean.

I'm guessing you tried Pensione Guerrato, an RS favorite, right?

Try the Hotel Riva or the Locando Al Leon. Both are very close to St. Mark's and recommended by Rick.

"I'm guessing you tried Pensione Guerrato, an RS favorite, right?" We stayed there in June, were very pleased and it is really nicely located, especially with the Rialto markets right there.

I loved La Calcina in the Dorsoduro - 5 minute walk to Rialto Bridge, but quiet, residential area. Right on the water. Great breakfast, AC, helpful, friendly staff. GO BULLS.

Isn't the running of the bulls in Pamplona? I didn't see any in Venice the last time I was there.

I checked on Venere and prices seem high for what is still available. The Music Bianniale starts Sept. 24, so that may account for high prices and limited availability.

Nigel, you have to be from Chicago to truly understand. GO BEARS.

I agree with Ca' Gottardi. Stayed there in May. It is directly on a canal which will take you back to the airport. The water taxi can pull up right at the hotel. Place was very comfortable, good breakfast. No elevator but the person in reception came down to assist with the luggage. THE BEST gelato a few doors down.
