Traveling june17 - 3 nights in Venice with my 18 year old grand son. Any suggestions on a moderately priced place to stay near St Marco or in between there and Rialto area.. We are both in great shape and can do stairs etc. Thanks Lorraine
I was going to share a suggestion, but I noticed it had no availability for your dates and the current prices are much higher than I expected. In fact, rates have gone up $200 for a three night stay from the time I made my reservations. All this is to say that if you are looking for reasonable prices in reasonable hotels, don’t put off making your reservations.
The place we've stayed several times in very close to the Rialto Bridge, but not between there and St Marco. But Venice is so small that location is not, in my opinion, all that important. We really like Pensione Guerrato. The location is very close to a vaporetto stop, but far enough away from Rialto Bridge to not be in the mob scene. If you book there let us know and we can give you directions that will eliminate a lot of walking with the luggage.
Lorraine,
I was really hoping the apartment I rented in November near San Barnaba was available, but it's already booked. So if you wouldn't mind a totally unsolicited opinion.... We've been going to Venice as often as possible since 1999, and the first trip (during Carnival) I was certain we should stay as close as possible to San Marco. I've never wanted to stay in that area again. Too busy, too touristy, just too. My favorite areas now are the Dorsoduro, San Toma, and San Polo. The prices are lower, the restaurants are where locals are eating, and they have the feeling of neighborhoods instead of tourist point zero. And are all a quick vaporretto ride or a pleasant walk to San Marco. You may know Venice equally well and have a good reason for staying in the very center, but just a thought. My favorite city in the world!
Hope this isn’t inappropriate, but just looked at Venice thinking there might not be much available and this looks wonderful!
Enjoy your trip.
Istituto San Guiseppe - a ‘hotel’ run by nuns. Great location, halfway between San Marco and Rialto. Good price. One doesn’t need to be Roman Catholic to stay there. Front desk speaks English. monasterystays.com
Thank you all so much for your inputs. I was wondering if I should venture out and not be locked into the tourist area of San Marco. I will try each of your suggestions - thank you
Sis - that apartment is gorgeous - thank you for the suggestion
