I stayed in the small, quaint Hotel bel Sito & Berlino, which used to be in Rick's books. Loved the location, very near St. Mark's and for Venice, relatively inexpensive. Nice breakfast. The rooms are small, but we enjoyed the place. Look them up on booking.com or venere.com More reliable than Trip Advisor.

my favorite for several years now: Hotel Ala. go to their web site not Great Western for the best rates. Really, I have never been more pleased in Venice - the Giglio vaporetto stop is right there; in 5 minutes you are either at San Marco or the Accademia; an amazing 'get your day started' breakfast buffet; and some very nice staff. Enjoy.

Have you thought about staying in an apartment? Tons of them in Venice, and cheaper.

Enjoy your Venice trip! I love Venice and have been there 4 times in the past few years. The best place to stay, in my opinion, is an apartment. You can always make your own meals if you want. Mauricio (Venetian) and Denise (an American) have always helped me. You send them an email with your dates that you will be there and if you have a special area, let them know what that is and they will send you several apartments to look at. Also how many bedrooms you need.

We had a lovely 1 bedroom apartment a year ago, within 10 minutes walk of San Marco Square and near a vaporetto stop.

Venice is very compact, so don't feel you have to stay close to St. Mark's.

We stayed at Locanda Orseolo this past August for 5 days and loved it. It's right behind St. Mark's Square; 5 minutes to St. Mark's Square & 10 minutes to the Rialto area. The hotel itself is on a little canal (the Orseolo canal) and we took a private water taxi from the airport directly to the hotel so it was an added bonus that the hotel had a water landing. The hotel is highly rated and for good reason. We thoroughly enjoyed the hotel and our stay there. Our room was very clean and comfortable. Their prices are very reasonable; we had a room with a canal view for less than what a lot of other hotels charged for a room without a canal view. The staff were amazing and couldn't do enough for us and the breakfasts were also great! I particularly loved the homemade fruit crepes! Have a great time in Venice!!

Karen, the Bauer Grunwald is steps from St. Marks square and faces the Grand canal. The rack rate on their website is expensive but I was able to book it through Travelocity for 220euro/night. That included free WiFi and breakfast every day. Yes, not cheap but when you see it and where it is. It was worth it! Joe
