I am looking for recommendations for a moderately prices hotel (100 Euros) in Venice. I have been told that the areas of Cannaregio, San Polo, and Dorsoduro are good places to stay. What are your thoughts? Experiences?
We love Dorsoduro and San Polo, and parts of Cannaregio, but some of that neighborhood feels too "wide open" and lacking in Venice charm for our taste. Actually most areas of Venice (apart from Mestre) are lovely, but close to San Marco you will find crowds and higher prices.
Your €100 budget is low but should be doable. If you do not get any recommendations, try using a booking agent like booking.com and filter results by price for your actual dates. This will identify some hotels and you can then contact them directly on their website.
€100 would be budget, not moderate, in Venezia, but it is achievable.
You could try monasteries, which come with a curfew (anywhere from 10-midnight), simple rooms (no phone, tv or fridge). But usually about €70-80 per night.
Where else are you going? Perhaps you could go up to €120 for Venezia and cut back in some other places, to average €100.
I have stayed in Dorsoduro and Cannaregio and like both for the homey neighborhood feel. My guess is you will find more options in your budget in Cannaregio. You don't mention how long you'll be staying but if for more than a night or two try VRBO.
In May, I stayed at Hotel Santa Lucia in Cannaregio. It is a 5 minute walk from the train station. I paid 55€ for a single with a shared bathroom. This included a simple breakfast served in their lovely garden. I found it clean and safe and appreciated the friendly, helpful staff. This is a Rick suggested hotel listed in *Italy. *
Hotel Tivoli is a good choice for a budget. Expect a clean, basic room with a private bathroom and breakfast. It is located where Dorsoduro borders San Polo. Near Frari Church. Don't fret about location. Each neighborhood has its own charms. Plus, you can easily access the rest of Venice from here. I like a quieter location as a reprieve from crowds. I stayed at this place and would do so again. The AC operates at night time only - roughly around 9 pm to 7 am more or less. No elevator.
