You know that canals are the roads in Venice? Our worst hotel there was on the Grand Canal, so much noise, a 5*, that we could not sleep. Best ever was in Cannaregio not facing the canal!

We stayed at Hotel Pappadopli which was on a smaller canal. It is a lovely hotel. The cost varies, but currently is $213 a night. It is over only 1-2 bridges from the train station.

Hotel Ala is right at the Giglio vaporetto stop. The rooms overlooking the smaller canal on the side of the hotel will give you some nice serenades as the gondolas go by. The hotel also puts you in a great spot - right between San Marco and the Accademia bridge. Amazing breakfast buffet!

I'm sorry, I still don't understand the question - is it the Grand Canal you want a view over, or any side canal is OK? Most hotels are on one or more side canals or Rios.

Hello and welcome Lotus!
I am not Robert but...
It is usually best if you start your own thread- your question will be seen by all and you will get more specific advice.

That said- we've always stayed at Hotel Ala- we originally chose it for the ease of access. Yes it is just steps from SM Giglio Vaporetto stop (which is also an Alilaguna stop -Alilaguna is the boat that goes to/from airport)- no bridges or canals to cross. It is located in a very quiet square yet just a 5 min walk to San Marco. We were just there in May again and it is as lovely and nice as ever. Fantastic bkft and their roof deck has been totally renovated since our last trip.
If you are arriving via train to Santa Lucia Venezia then you just have to walk outside, get your vaporetto pass at the kiosk and board a Line 1 boat.
They do have a few family rooms, we happened to get one this last trip -very nice to have all that extra room
It is really easier to arrive in Venice than it is to leave since the airport is a boat or boat/bus ride away (or private water taxi). We did just leave from Venice and had an 11 am flight- many flights to US leave earlier than that. It was fine for us as we knew how to get to airport and gave ourselves plenty of time.

We stayed at the Foscari Palace - twice. And it was on the grand canal... Despite someone else's perspective that their canal view was too noisy, ours wasn't. Proof that each person has his or her own perspective.

We have stayed in the Gonzaga Suite with a canacl view, and the deluxe room with a canal view... Both were great. The hotel overlooks a gondola docking station, so you can watch the gondoliers prep the boats in the morning or "put them to bed" at night.

Also, the hotel has a rooftop patio, and the times we've stayed there we were the only ones using it. GREAT views across the top of the city to watch the sun set, hear the church bells peal, the canal's activities slow considerably, and savor the day's touring over charcutirie and wine you pick up at a local salumeria...

Oh, and the vaporetto stop is practically in front of the hotel, too.

We stayed on the Grand Canal, close to the Rialto bridge, our room and balcony was right on the GC. Loved the view and there wasn’t any noise at night (and i’m a verrry light sleeper). Didn’t love the (RS recommended) hotel so no point giving the name. But being on the Grand Canal was fantastic.

Lots of hotels on the Grand Canal, but not all the rooms are facing the canal. If that is what you want, you'll have to specify it on booking and pay a higher price for the most part.
