Any recommendations for nice hotels in Venice in May? Preferably away from the madding tourist crowds and reasonably priced? Many thanks
I always suggest getting accommodations near the train station when travelling in Europe, and especially in Venice. Goes back to backpacking days in my youth. I want to arrive, drop off my stuff in the hotel and go out and have fun. Also, makes it easy to depart. Train stations usually have lots of hotel selections and places to eat, and prices can be cheap or expensive depending upon your budget.
It is a pain to have to deal with luggage in Venice, in particular. You need to use the vaporetto or the very expensive water taxi you have to lug stuff over steps and bridges. So IMO, it is better to find a place close to point of arrival. We stayed at the Best Western Hotel Olimpia which is near the Piazzle Roma. This is by the bus station which is the most affordable way to travel to and from the airport, or a short walk over the bridge from the train station. The Olimpia is a classic Venetian hotel with a great breakfast. You can walk or take the vaporetto to the major attractions.
I used Hotel Tivoli in Dorsoduro/San Polo neighborhood. This is a good area to get away from the hoardes and yet, close enough to walk or boat to the "action." Near Frari Church. Hotel Tivoli is not big. It is a bare-bones clean room and bathroom. Breakfast included. I would stay here again. The restaurants in this area are better priced and better quality than much of what you will find near San Marco square. Good luck!
Hi! We stayed at Hotel Ca' Dogaressa two summers ago. Wonderful Venetian hotel on one of the smaller canals near the train station (very easy walk) and near vaporetto stop. No crowds, breakfast included, friendly staff and great views from their rooftop seating area! We had a wonderful time and this place was fabulous!
Unsure what you would be looking for, but we stayed at a lovely BnB - Residenza de L'Osmarin - www.residenzadelosmarin.com. [email protected] is Maria Elisabetta's email. She and her husband were fantastic innkeepers. The room we had was small (we were last minute) but very comfortable, with a wonderful view of a canal. Breakfast was fresh and tasty and plentiful, and they helped so much with advice on where to go and what to do. Plus the fee we paid was 100Euros less than the hotel that my husband had originally booked. it was very close to Piazza san Marco, and an easy walk from the Vaporetto stop. It was really very central to so much. Good luck!
We just came back from Italy and stayed at Ca' San Trovaso in Venice. It's in the Dorsoduro area, and the area is very quiet and affordable. It's a quick walk to the outer lagoon for a vaporetto ride, and not too far from the Accademia bridge. We enjoyed our stay very much. Alessandra is very helpful and gave us a RS discount. (He recommends it as well) I loved Venice but not the crowds! This area is like your secret getaway in the city!
Hotel Le Isole is just a few minutes from the main square, but seems like miles away (quiet and nice). Ask for the room with the little balcony overlooking the canal in one direction and the window looking over the same little canal in the other direction. Bathroom is very small, but you absolutely cannot beat the location.
My husband enjoyed watching the gonoliers begin their days, as well as watching the laundry boat, the equivalent of the UPS boat, etc. while I was getting ready in the morning. A breakfast (with bacon, eggs, etc. made to order) is included with the room rate, and it is served in a very private, quiet enclosed courtyard, and afternoon tea/cookies is also served there. In fact, one evening when we were just exhausted, we brought back little to-go dinners and enjoyed those in the courtyard with the complimentary adult beverages that are in the fridge for guests.
Staff was wonderful and very helpful.
While I had considered some of the very high-end hotels on the grand canal, but decided against them due to the very high prices, my husband kept saying over and over what a homerun I made in finding the Hotel Le Isole. If we return to Venice, we would book the exact same room again. Very quiet, very restful location.
We stayed at Hotel Serenissima, Venice, on an RS trip. It is a very short walk across a couple small canals to San Marco Square. It was great and if I ever get back to Venice I will try to stay there again.
You can read lots of reviews on tripadvisor for this hotel. I think if you book directly with the hotel, the price is a little better.
There are two we have stayed in that are less-touristy areas: Ca'Angeli in San Polo and Locanda la Corte. Both are relatively budget-friendly (at least according to my criteria), small, friendly, good service, charming, old-world. No noisy streets!
Loved this place
not touristy, not near tourists, but everything is walkable. Got it for under $100 a night for 3 nights in late April last year.
We've stayed in the Hotel Abbazia several times and can recommend it. It is a former Carmelite Monestery that has been converted into a hotel. It is located in the Canereggio section, where the train station is located. It's on a quiet Calle, alley, a few streets from the train station. The staff is outstanding, the rooms were extremely clean, and the breakfast was substantial.
When we travel by train we like to find a hotel not too far from the station.
Since cruise lines have built docks for their ships the maddening crowds are 24/7. Although, we generally roam the back streets and find a different environment.
Buon viaggio,
