Stella,
You may want to check out the Pensione Guerrato, Db $135 in 2016 RS Italy book. RS uses it heavily. We have used it on tours and when in Venice on our own. Stayed in one of the apartments last May. They have 3 - 4 apartments located in the area. Great friendly staff and owners.

The PG is located close to the Rialto Bridge. There is also a vaporetto stop about 100 yds from the hotel.
Good Luck,
Gene

We've used the Pensione Guerrato on several occasions also. It's a fine place, but just be aware there's no elevator and you'll have to climb several flights of stairs every time you come and go.

You can also check out the Hotel Fontana, great location close to St Mark's but still just far enough to avoid the crowds and very close to the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop. Very convenient if you are travelling on your own. Decent sized room, good breakfast and pleasant owners. We stayed for 2 nights in November 16. Highly recommended.

I keep numerous hotels/b&b's on my short list when this forum begins to list out their favorite lodgings for towns ! We are always on the lookout for charming and convenient, with a dash of something that is intangible.

Our last Venice stay was at Ca' Bonvicini. They had a small rooftop terrace, breakfast brought to your room, rooms overlooking a small canal - the canal was quiet - we kept our windows open. And it was simple to get to from the vaporetto and was easy to walk ALL over Venice.

After several tries, including RS recommendations, I settled on Hotel Ala (right at the Giglio vaporetto stop, almost a decade ago. Have been there ever since for at least a week. Glorious place with an equally glorious staff.

I stayed at Hotel Guerrato 3 or 4 times and appreciated its location near the Rialto Bridge. However, several years ago when Guerrato was fully booked, they suggested I try Hotel Al Ponte Mocenigo, a few minutes' walk away (and just off the San Stae vaporetto stop - no bridges from vaporetto to hotel!). After staying at Al Ponte Mocenigo twice, I much prefer it for the lovely rooms, warm and very helpful staff, gorgeous outdoor patio/breakfast area and common area, easy access to vaporetto (only 3 stops from the train station, too), and wonderful yet quiet neighborhood. The cost is about the same, if not a bit less, than Hotel Guerrato. I just booked them for three nights in October, 2017. Although a well-known Booking website, and their own website, did not show a room available for my dates, I emailed them directly. They got back to me in less than a day and offered three different room choices. They then sent a secure booking page link on which to confirm my reservation.

I was happy with Casa Rezzonico in the Dorsoduro area. Dorsoduro is a great place to stay -- quiet and not crowded, but near plenty of restaurants. Casa Rezzonico is on a nice quiet canal, and the owners are extremely friendly.

When I was researching our October trip, I looked at old posts on this subject for ideas. For the benefit of future searchers, I add Ca' San Trovaso in Dorsoduro. On a charming small canal, very comfortable, great location. I did pay more for canal view, because it's Venice after all, and to me it was worth it.

Booking.com was useful for checking out hotels. They have reviews that seem reliable.

We've stayed at both Pensione Guerrato and Casa Rezzonico and thoroughly enjoyed both. I put some photos on flickr of Rezzonico and the surrounding area, in case you're curious. https://flic.kr/s/aHsjTBGc8B

For Rezzonico, I really enjoyed having the church belltower nearby and the fact that our room opened out onto a small canal. At one point we got to watch some Venetians on the street serenade their friend in a nearby building, watching from a balcony. Apparently he was about to get married. Charming. Good restaurants nearby and the famous GROM gelateria (yum). GROM is the Ben & Jerry's of Italy.

I've not stayed at Casa Rezzonico, but have walked past a heap of times. The location is very good, not a single bridge to cross from the Ca' Rezzonico vap stop. Really easy to find from the vap stop - walk up the only street available from the vap stop, diagonally across Campo San Barnaba, and continue for about fifty metres along the canal.

The bells from the Carmini campanile toll the hours, lovely.
