We are traveling from Croatia to Venice via shuttle (most likely) on September 19 and flying out the next day late morning. I hate to spend the night in Venice and not be in Venice, but would like to keep things relatively simple and reasonable vis-a-vis water taxi, etc. I am looking for a hotel that is perhaps close to the train/bus station for easy shuttle and airport connections, but still within easy walking distance into the city center. I have only visited Venice once before and find the logistics of the city to be a bit confusing! Many thanks in advance for advice.

Marriott Courtyard by airport. Easy bus ride to Piazzale Roma then vap to anywhere in Venezia

Since your flight is late-morning, I recommend staying on the island and taking the bus to the airport in the morning.
You will probably arrive from Croatia at the train station and a hotel near there will allow you to check in and then walk around Venice after most of the tourists leave. You can get anywhere in Venice fairly quickly on foot or water bus.
Try Booking.com to find a room near "Venice Santa Lucia Train Station", you can sort by distance and filter to suit your price range.

In your circumstances I would choose a hotel within walking distance of Piazzale Roma, where the airport shuttle buses board. Then you have an easy ride to the airport, with no transfers.
