Venice Hotel rather picky - help?

Is anyone familiar with Venice able to recommend something for me in Venice with the following criteria:

  1. Location away from the madding crowds but still in a nice and interesting neighborhood. Canal view not important.
Perhaps in the outer reaches of Canaregio or Castello?

  2. Private bathroom somewhat important to us.

  3. Reasonable priced, say $150 or less?

Thanks in advance if you have any tips! I'll go look at Booking.com too...

I can make two suggestions in the Cannaregio area-

(1) Dolomite Hotel- at Cannaregio 73-74 is under $150, quiet, has comfortable rooms and a friendly staff, and you can walk to the train station or water taxis and ferries in 5 minutes so is convenient. You have a private bathroom and air conditioning! There are three restaurants close by and you get a continental breakfast with added meats and cheeses at the hotel.

(2) Locanda Herron- at Cannaregio 1697/A is as quiet and convenient to transport as the first hotel. Comfy rooms, friendly staff who speak English, and private bathrooms as well as air-conditioning. Some rooms have Italian frescoes on the ceilings for an added touch of elegance. It is under $150. Bathrooms come with toiletries and a hairdryer.

These suggestions are very much appreciated.

We also just got onto the idea of a Monastery stay while in Venice. Any experience with it?

I stayed at hotel Tivoli. It's a small, clean basic place near Frari Church. I really liked the location for morning and evening strolls. It takes you away from the hoards of tourists, but is still conveniently located. The price is a little higher than your budget, but still a value for Venice. Friendly front desk people, basic breakfast included. Only draw back is NO elevator, if that's an issue for you. Not a problem for us.

Monasteries are fine but accommodations are very simple. There are several in Venice, at least one on the northern part of Cannaregio, very quiet, reasonable curfew, private bath and breakfast.

EDIT: You may be able to get a similar price through booking.com or some other booking site. I stayed at San Marcuolo last year for about the same as a monastery (both doubles, with bath and breakfast).

Your budget is totally dependent on the season. Hotel prices can vary by a huge amount at different times of the year. When are you going?

You might try Albergo Marin. http://www.albergomarin.it/en/

Wife and I liked it and seems to meet your criteria. Rick Steves recommendation in guide that I have. Really nice people. Good location by my standards, across the canal from the train station but nice neighborhood. Kind of long walk to St Mark's but trying to navigate through Venice is more fun than the destination.

You might find something for that price in the eastern parts of Castello toward Sant'Elena. It's mostly locals there, since it's so out of the way. You might consider an apartment as well. Vrbo.com or airbnb.com are good options.

We stayed at Hotel Do Pozzi.. It was near St Mark's Square which was ideal for us as we were there only 2 nights. Can't tell you enough about the hotel.. really really excellent. I was so confused as to how to get to them from Marco Polo airport and they actually emailed step by step directions!! Free breakfast. Private bathrooms. very clean
