We are thinking of using our hotel points for a stay in Venice. The Boscolo Autograph Collection hotel is located on the north side of Cannaregio on Rio d'Sant Alvise. It's a great looking historic property on the canal which google maps says is a 25 min walk to Piazza San Marco. This is our first time to Venice and we will most likely be arriving by train. We want to see some of the famous sights, wander a bit and probably take a trip to the smaller islands. We generally don't spend much time in our room and are open to staying elsewhere.
In your opinion will this location be inconvenient for getting around the city for 3 days of sightseeing?
Well, it's not the most centrally located place and a lot of folks would rule it out because of that. But Venice is a small place. One can walk anywhere and everywhere -- and that is a really the best way to experience a very unique city. It also appears there is a vap. stop close by on one side of the island, and just a relatively shot walk to a vap. stop on the Grand Canal on the other side of the island. And if you can use points to pay the bill then all the better. I absolutely would not rule it out because of the location and will keep the hotel in mind for our next trip.
I stayed in that neighborhood last year. Very authentic, fewer tourists, great places to eat with the locals. It's a little bit more of a walk to the square but not much. I would definitely stay there again.
As long as it's on Venice Island then GO for it! What I never recommend is staying in Mestre...even if you have a free room Mestre is just not Venice.
It's off the tourist path, but that's one of my favorite parts of Venice. If you want to dine with the locals, check out the nearby Paradiso Perduto restaurant, often with live music. Drop by during the day and make a reservation for that night.
Michael is right, off the main path. I too have Marriott points. We chose to spend a ton of money and stay near San Marco at the Bauer. However next time I am at the Boscolo for sure. We stayed at the Courtyard near airport too. Good, convenient location for air travel.
Get a vaporetto ticket for the number of days you will be in Venice. Ride anywhere anytime if you don't want to walk. Then the Boscolo is great. Local non-touristy amenities. Lear about the real Venice. There are two Vap stops near the hotel.
Whatever you doyou will love Veice.
I agree with Tim, Michael, and others that staying away from the heavily touristy areas is a good thing. Walking thru the different neighborhoods is part of the experience and doesn't take all that long if you really must be somewhere at a certain time (versus a casual stroll), but if you get tired of walking, then yes, vaporetto is good experience too. We are looking forward to next trip in couple weeks!
is the price to good to believe? maybe the distance from the center allow the hotel to cut back on the rooms? it is more than a 1/2 hour walk. caution...
