We will arrive at the bus station Venezia around 10 o’clock in mid October. We need a hotel room for that night and the next night after which we will take the train to Padua to join Rick Steves’ Village Italy tour. I don’t like arriving that late, but that’s our situation. We are two adults with one carryon size bag and one standard size backpack each. I hate to do it but I’m thinking I need to get something in the vicinity of the train station. I called the RS office with my question and a very helpful representative suggested just that. We will end up with one full day and half the next day for sightseeing. We will have flown from Lithuania that day so we won’t have jet lag. Still we need to get to accommodations quickly before the front desk closes. Bear in mind it will be dark and totally unfamiliar territory as we have not visited Venice previously. I’m welcoming suggestions.
If you 'hate to do it', then I say don't. I would rather wake up to a nice view, and a nice breakfast and get on with sightseeing in Venice. I recommend Hotel Paganelli. (I have stayed there twice). It's a great location and the front desk is staffed 24/7.

Why do you hate being close to the train station? There are plenty of very nice hotels within walking distance. And many will have a 24 hr front desk. Go to booking.com and filter for your requirements. You can specify the S. Lucia station area, rating level, and, more importantly budget, plus anything else of importance to you. Then book directly with the hotel. Without knowing your budget, have a look at Hotel Principe. Its well rated and a 3 minute walk from the station.
Nice hotel near station

The Olimpia Hotel is only a few minutes walk from the bus station and about a 10 minute walk over the Constitution Bridge to the train station. Good luck.
Another vote for Abbazia Hotel...it's on a quiet street and very near the train station.
