Does anyone know how I can find out if a hotel was extensively damaged during Dec. floods? Also, if you have any good recommendations on hotels on Grand Canal within a 10 minute walk from St Marks, that would be great. Hotel Santangelo wants $1358 plus for 2 people, 2 nights! I can splurge but that's a bit outrageous.
Try Hotel Ala (Giglio vaporetto stop). They are closed for a short while in January for annual work.
Hotel le isole is not on the Grand Canal but a short 5 minute walk. It is also a short walk to St Marks Square. It is a lovely boutique hotel with a delicious breakfast. Can't comment if they had any water damage due to the flooding.
Would you be willing to stay in an Air B and B or VRBO property? I researched for an upcoming trip (we decided to take a tour instead) but I can tell you- I found the most amazing and unique properties in Venice- more so than any location I was interested in travelling to. Some of them were just so unique, and beautiful! Living in a historic property on a canal in historic Venice for 2 days.. waving at the gondoliers passing by.. you get my drift!
I see you are willing to go more upscale and you can get something here for much less expensive (I think) than the hotel you listed above.
My fear is your question about the damage.. I don't know when you are going but you would definitely want to read current reviews prior to booking. Also look at the location- and specify something close to St. Marks. There are other neighborhoods that have more of a "local" feel like Canneregio. But you have to make sure to apply your "filter" when checking so you don't get too far away from your desired location. There may be a lot of walking involved with luggage to get to your desired location. On bumpy alleys and small bridges.
It's worth checking out! I am not advocating this- I haven't actually done it. But in my research there were some places that looked AMAZING! We ended up booking a Rick Steve's tour- but I did notice the selections from Air BnB and VRBO were just amazing in Venice overall. Good luck!
Last thoughts- hotels usually let you check your luggage before and after check in times for no cost (but ask ahead) and also they usually include breakfast. Those are an added benefit to booking a hotel as opposed to a private rental.
Be sure to write down very specific directions to your lodging prior to going. My advice is to look at a map and write down a detailed list of directions to get to your lodging prior to stepping off of the traghetto.
Good Luck! Happy travels
We stayed 10 minutes from San Marco but not on the Grand Canal. We spent a week at Hotel Flora. Lovely ambiance, delicious and generous breakfast buffet, well appointed rooms, and weather permitting you can enjoy their courtyard. Larger rooms face the courtyard. We would gladly stay there again.
No hotel was extensively damaged. Incidentally, there was no "flooding" in Venice, it was a tide and tides create and solve the problem by themselves twice a day.
I don't get why anyone would want to stay so close to San Marco square. It's overcrowded, expensive, full of tourist traps serving tourists food and, since it's the lowest area in Venice, it's also the first area that goes underwater when the morning tide is higher than usual.
Thank you Lisa, Janis, Robert, Joyce and Dario for your responses....I will check out all of these ideas. I did see a BnB that looked great. A friend who travels extensively advised me to check on hotel water damage from December storms. Sorry Dario, I did in fact know the excessive overflow of water we saw on the news was caused by tides; where I live this happens as well. When it happens extensively, we simply refer to it as flooding. San
