Venice Hotel American Dinesen or Apartment? Need advice.

Hello, We are booked at Hotel American Dineson already for three nights in September, however - I am looking at changing to find a less expensive place to stay ($735E for 3 nights there). Hotel is in Dorsoduro area (has balcony with canal view). I found a few apartments that are very very nice for almost 1/2 that price but just not sure about the location and how long of a hike it would be to get to the center of town for a couple of these apartments. Two are located at the furthest point of Cannaregio (close to train station) and one is in Castello pretty far out there also. None of these have canal views. Found a good one in Santa Croce and a good one in San Polo also. Has anyone stayed at this hotel or in any of these area's and have experience with the locations? Thanks! Amy

I would concentrate on making sure it's a quality place instead of so much emphasis on the location. Venice Island is rather small and easily navigable. Some of our best times in Venice have been while "trying" to get lost.

I am a big advocate of apartments over hotels. If you have never tried an apartment, I would encourage you to think about it. Even if you don't want to cook - you have so much more space and my memory is that the hotels in Venice are very small. If you are interested in cooking even a little - visiting the Rialto market then cooking something you buy there sounds wonderful.
I visited Venice twice before I discovered apartment rentals - so this fall will be my first opportunity to cook in Venice and I can't wait.... And after renting an apartment the first time - I can never imagine staying in hotels for longer than a night or two again.
