Venice, hotel advice?

Coming into Venice on a cruise, would like to stay near the Rialto Bridge. Concerned about luggage transportation. Next stop, either train station or airport depending on where we plan our next stop.

hey sig
what is your dates. are you staying in venice after cruise and how many days? are you looking for a hotel or an apartment? how much luggage do you have? You will get different answers as to where to stay, i prefer near the train station so i'm not dragging bags over bridges, steps, crowded vaporettos and calles, Go visit san marco square and rialto bridge with the maddening crowds and then walk back to you quiet room, it's fun and crazy to people watch, stop for a glass of wine, have a meal then walk back to your place and easy access to train station. we stayed in canareggio area and loved it.

Gerri is talking about luggage limits on the vaporettos (public water buses). When you buy a ticket to ride the vaporetto you're entitled to bring 1 piece of luggage although I've seen people dragging multiple bags on board usually with little or no repercussion.

I would be less concerned about the vaporetto and more about walking from the pier to the hotel. Even a 5-10 minute walk can include having to cross 2-3 small bridges, but that means lots of stairs. And if you need to cross the Rialto Bridge, you are better off going past your stop, getting off farther along the Grand Canal and taking a vaporetto in the other direction.

On our first cruise we found a nice B&B a short walk from the main train station in Venice. The best deals on hotels are those near the Plaza across the canal from the main train station, where the busses from the airport deposit passengers.

We had been to Venice three times before, since we lived in Germany for four years. Still, we had to schlep our suitcases over a bridge (with steps-no dragging luggage) then about a quarter of a mile to our B&B. It was July and hot and the we had two large and two carryon suitcases. I handled the large and my Wife handled the carryons.

The Vaporetto would have helped, but we didn't know the closest station or if we could take luggage. After our days in Venice, we did take the Vaporetto with luggage back to the Plaza then to the people mover and port.

While we managed to do this, I don't recommend it for others.

There are hotels on the same side of the canal where the plaza busses drop you, that would be the best choice, unless you want to pay for a very expensive water taxi.

The vaps are pretty relaxed about carrying luggage, or anything else for that matter. I have seen a tradesman with both a serious arc welder and oxy acetylene set get onto a vap without it being a big deal.

They are probably more lenient with local tradesmen. WE have had no issues with one small roller bag, but I have seen them order others to remove backpacks as they took up too much room.

What kind of lodging are you looking for, Sig? Canal view, balcony, high-end or budget? Hotel only, or would you consider B and B, or maybe an apartment?

Thank you for all the helpful advice. We are going to Venice following a cruise September 2019. We have been to Venice before about 10 years ago, staying at Loconda Remedio, enjoyed it, but seeking something new. Read about Hotel Rialto, seems very nice, anyone stayed there? We will probably have three pieces of luggage, two large one small. Don't mind taking private water taxi if necessary. Really not looking forward to dragging luggage too far. My wife does not understand the concept of traveling light, but rather bring everything just in case.

We found a nice B&B in the Santa Croce district, close to the train and cruise port. Right on a canal, but less touristy than San Marco. Hotel Dalla Mora. We walked to cruise port and the train from there. It is within walking distance to the Rialto. Walking the streets and canals is worth it.

Thank you all for your thoughts and recommendations. After looking at a lot of hotels, decided on Pensione Accademia. Looks like a lovely place.
