There are a few (much more inexpensive) ways to get from the airport, but if you want to splurge, as I did when bringing my husband to Venice for the first time, check out www.venicelink.com They have shared water taxis, private water taxis, and water taxis with tours on the way. We took the last, which included a slow ride through Murano and then down the entire Grand Canal (which was breathtaking even for me, a seasoned Venice visitor) for 130 euros. Yes, this is undeniably an enormous luxury, but all four of us agreed it was nothing short of spectacular!

The bus to the Piazzale Roma is easy and cheap. You can easily walk to the Canareggio or take the vaparetto down the Grand Canal a few stops.

the short answer to your question is yes absolutely. you can take either a land taxi or one of two buses that run from the Marco Polo main terminal to Piazzale Roma. From there you would most likely cross the new bridge across the Grand Canal to the train station and walk to you lodging. Current cost for the bus is 3 euro for the express Blue ATVO fly bus or 2 euro for the orange ACTV bus. Takes aout 20-25 minutes. Don't know the cost of the land taxi.

You can walk but do you want to be walking to a route unknown to you at that time, carrying your bags up and down bridges? If you want to splurge take the water taxi, if you don't mind a bit of a long ride but want to save money the Alilaguna water bus, there are 3 routes. Otherwise the least romantic but probably cheapest but most transfers would be bus or taxi to Piazzale Roma and then a Vaporetto.

If you want to arrive by water and not pay out your ear for it, check out the Alilaguna. I believe the Arancio route should do it for you. It's around 12 euro pp.

The whole of Venice is walkable in my experience. Just be aware that there are lots of bridges. "Luggage and bridges" to me is never fun. And then, there can be lots of other tourists on Strada Nuova depending on the time of day. If you are watching your budget, a bus and then a vaporetto to San Marcoula (sp?) stop is probably the cheapest by a few euro over the alilaguna. Of course "best" if cost is not an issue is always by a water taxi.

This and many other similar questions are covered really well in the RS book for both Italy and specific to Venice. If you don't have either of these yet, you really should pick one up. It will be the smartest money you spend on your vacation. One of the best things about his books is that he answers questions you don't even know to ask. Happy travels.
