We'll be in Venice for just two days next week, and we'd like to make the most of our time there. We're planning to do a lot of walking, as we know that's one of the best ways to see the city. What are the top few things you'd recommend for such a short visit? And what about food--any recommendations on good food that's not too pricey? Thank you!

hey Barbara
look up cicchetti tours pub crawl, alessandro (schezzini.it). learn about venice and have appetizers and wine along the way. are you planning to see murano or burano islands. I prefer burano, take a vaporetto early, walk around and see the pastels houses have lunch and return. you will get lost or as we say on an adventure and stay away from the crowds and daytrippers. take a walk to canareggio and later afternoon to rialto bridge and san marco square when they are gone, stop in a piazza sit and people watch, take a gondola ride in the back canals, it's touristy but a must and we are tourists.

One of the memorable restaurants for me was Osteria Alla Staffa. The food was fabulous and the walk to find it was really fun. It isn't fancy, it is just really, really good food. As for making the most of your time, you have the right idea in saying you plan on doing a lot of walking. We saw all of the main sights and I enjoyed it all, but nothing was more fun than just walking around not having a clue where I was.

All lovely suggestions--thank you! I mean, mille grazie!
Start early - while the city is mainly filled with people taking rubbish away and bringing goods to hotel and shops. Experience San Marco empty - it is a very different experience than seeing it filled with day tourists. Visit the food market next to Ponte Rialto and take the Traghetto across Canale Grande.
Visit San Marco in the evening after dinner and enjoy the music.
With two days I don't think you have time to visit Burano, which would have been my next suggestion.
We were just there a few weeks ago. We had 2.5 days. Like everyone else says, early and late are key. We did a 7:00 am Sunday mass at St Marks and there were just 20 of us in the entire church plus no wait. We had enough time to visit Lido beach for a catnap and lunch. We also loved Burano. Still had time to see most of the other sites plus a couple long walks along the water. Two days should be enough time to see your top priorities.
