I will be visiting Venice for Carnival this year. Since I'm very late making plans, the only reasonable accommodations are on the mainland or Lido. Would staying on Lido and taking the water taxi into town be a smart move? Or would it remove me from a genuine Carnival experience of some kind? One other thing: I've already been to Venice, so this trip wouldn't be to "do" Venice so much as it would be simply to experience Carnival. Thank you!
I don't see how it would affect your Carnivale experience that much unless you planned on staying on the main island til the wee hours of the night (not sure when the Lido boat stops running). If so, Mestre might be a better plan as you can always take a cab (about 25 euros I think) back after the trains stop running.
Staying on the Lido will give you more of a Venice experience than staying on the mainland. That said, you will want to check to see when the last vaporetto is, lest you get stranded. If you do stay on the Lido, definitely buy a pass.
Definitely choose Lido over Mestre (mainland). However, if you can find a place on Venice Island that would be the best place!
try www.venere.com for rooms. Remember that unless you get a pass while you are there, it is 6.50 euro every time you take the vaporetto. Being in the main part of Venice would be better.
