Unless you particularly want to see something that's in the Correr, the Academia has a much broader collection and a collection of higher quality.
Regarding the Doges palace, I enjoyed the secret itineraries tour far more than the rest of the palace. If you want to do the secret itineraries tour, you'll need to book ahead. (And after the tour, you can explore the rest of the palace)
Take Vaporetto through the Grand Canal from train Station to Piazza San Marco (or vice versa).
Visit Piazza San Marco (Basilica, Campanile, Doges' palace)
Walk to Accademia and visit the Accademia.
Wander the streets (calli) and piazzas (campi) all the way to Rialto Bridge then the Basilica Dei Frari.
The day you arrive (before the first night), if you arrive early enough, visit Murano and Burano.
Congrats on the upcoming nuptials! When is the big day? what time will you arrive in Venice? When/how will you depart? We were married in early November and arrived in Venice around noon. We took a water taxi directly to our hotel on Guidecca Island. The 45-minute boat ride was the perfect "cure" to jet lag because we were in bright sunshine soaking in the beauty of Venice. It was well worth the 100 euros. This gave us the stamina to keep going until close to midnight the first night. We still woke up early the next morning for a full day of sight-seeing. For your two nights, you may be blue to squeeze in a full day and a half. We really enjoyed the Doge's Palace and the Accademia. We did not visit the Correr so I can't provide any feedback there. One thing that we really enjoyed was just wandering the back lanes and going into churches. We saw a lot of really neat churches and other interesting buildings and piazzas on our wanderings. We took a train from Venice to Florence and scheduled that for around 1500 one afternoon. We spent the morning wandering and left for the train station an hour ahead of time due to the length of the trip from Guidecca. If you are near the Grand Canal, this trip will be much shorter. Good luck!
See the blitz itinerary at http://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/read/articles/planning-your-time-in-venice. But if you'll have more time for art musuems in Florence or Rome, then don't worry about running out of time for them in Venice. Do allow time to experience the architecture and ambiance by vaporetto on the Grand Canal, gondola on smaller canals, and/or walking away from the main San Marco-Rialto tourist path.
Thanks everyone! We are going the end of June. Yes we arrive in Venice at 9 am. Our travel agent recommended doing a Doge's Palace tour including other surrounding areas. This way we don't spend time wondering around wasting time, since it is also a time that it will be crowded and hot. We will then have more time in the day to do other things. I just wasn't sure what other museums to see if any other ones. Seems like the Academia Gallery is better then the Correr. We are also going to Florence for 3 nights, Rome for 4, and Sorrento for 5.
we also did just one long glorious day in Venice.....you can see a lot. do san Marco earlier in the day rather than later......we stopped into a lot of small church/museums, but did not do a "big" museum, having done a lot of that in Florence. we rode the water bus for an hour in the afternoon just to get a different perspective. we bought small sandwiches at a gorgeous bakery for lunch. i'm sure several folks will recommend dinner places if you ask. enjoy your trip!!!
I hear that you can take the elevator up the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore, which provides wonderful views, including being able to look across the canal at the Piazza San Marco.
I always enjoy riding a vaparetto up and down the Grand Canal at night when the palazzi are all lit up and you can see inside to the beautiful interiors and the frescoed and plastered ceilings. Light dancing on the water, warm breezes...it's magical and oh so romantic!
