Venice-Florence-Rome vs. Sicily-Naples trip in April-May

Hello!

I am planning to spend 3 weeks in Italy in the end of April-first half of May.

I am trying to decide whether to go to Venice (possibly visiting Verona, Ferrara, etc.)—Florence (possibly visiting Siena, Lucca, Pisa)—Assisi—Rome. I am interested in art, architecture and sculpture and I want to visit Medieval and Renaissance historic towns between on my way to Rome.

Or to go to Sicily (Palermo, Agrigentum, Segentum, etc.) and then spend some time in Naples and visit Pompei and Herculaneum.

I have been to Venice (briefly a long time ago), Rome and Florence, but I have never been to Sicily and Naples. I am interested in the ancient world and have been to ancient ruins in Athens, Crete and Turkey.

I am also wondering what the weather would be like in those locations in April-May?

Thanks!

Tough choice! Weather is, as you know, less predictable than it ever was with climate change, but in general you could/should get nice weather with both itineraries. I would say Venice-Florence-Rome + a few days trips is very easy by train. When we went to Sicily (which is magnificent!), we rented a car because it seemed a bit more complicated and/or time-consuming to take public transportation. Naples is also fabulous.

for an April-May trip, I might give the edge to Sicily + Naples.
