I have 10 days and need help with an itinerary which minimizes 1 night stays. I'd like to see Venice, Florence and Milan and visit some of the interesting cities between these three, like Pisa, perhaps Sienna, Padua and Veronna. Lake Como and Cinque Terre are not top of my list.
10 days on the ground in Italy? Wher do you fly in & out? Maybe 3 in Florence, with one of those as a full day trip to Siena. 3 in Venice, 2 in Lake Como & 2 in Milan
Fly into Milano and take the fast train to Venice, spend 3 nights there; you can do a half-day trip to Padova to see the Giotto frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel. You could also do a daytrip to Verona from Venice (or make it a very long day by combining Verona and Padova). Florence: four nights for a full daytrip to Siena, a half-day for Pisa, and the rest for Florence itself. Milano: the remainder of your nights (probably 3). Milano has lots to see, it's a little more than an hour from Como if you decide you want a day on the lake. Fly out of Milano. Let me know if you want more specific information.
between venice and milan: mantova, cremona, brescia and bergamo
Thank you all for your responses. Life got in the way and I'm just now getting back to my planing. Here's what I've come up with: Fly into Florence for 4 nights, with 2 day trips...one to Pisa/Luca and the other to Siena. Take train to Venice for 2 nights. Take train to Milan and stop on the way in Padua and possibly Veronna, too. Two nights in Milan (one full day), then fly out. What do you think?
I would do the other way around (start in Milan, usually morning arrival, end in Florence) and I would stay only one night in Milan. I'm not particularly fond of Milan. Also I don't like to depart from Milan Malpensa (often flights back are in the early morning and Malpensa is kind of far). If you fly using a European airline out of Milan Linate, then it doesn't matter, since Linate is just minutes from downtown. If you use Florence airport you will be using a European airline (probably either Lufthansa-Swiss via FRA or MUC or ZRH or AirFrance-Klm-Alitalia via CDG or AMS )
Thanks for your insightful comments.
I highly recommend Verona! Go see an opera performance in the Roman colleseum (sp?) if you can...amazing experience! The city is unchanged for hundreds of years and you really get a sense of old Italy. Not much to see in Pisa except for the leaning tower and the church. Hoardes of tourists...
We LOVE Siena...have been back several times. Gorgeous city, old, winding streets, fantastic food, beautiful architecture, and great ambiance. Could wander around there for weeks. The surrounding hill towns are wonderful to visit as well. If you want to plant yourself for a few nights then Siena is perfect. We spent 4 nights there and were able to see a lot!
