Venice Florence and rome tour HELP!!

Hi,
I just wanted to know how people decided where to fly in for the Venice! The problem is from NYC their are no direct flights.
I hear Milan but anybody did the train! Stay overnight then late afternoon head to Venice.
We are both active young travels age range 30-40 so we don’t mind the travel but we have never been to Europe

We are looking for July tour preferred Monday starting and possible leaving NY Friday night or Saturday night. We also want to stay in Rome extra day

Any help or previous travel would be SO Appreciated

Yes we flew to Milan in 2012. But we stayed in Varenna on Lake Como for three nights, then Milan for one, before heading to Venice. Dont stress, its not that hard once you're on the ground. It would be OK to fly to Milan, take the train from the airport to Milan Centrale railway station, and then on to Venice. If you'r flight arrives in Milan in the morning, you might as well keep moving on to Venice, since you won't be able to check in to a hotel until afternoon anyway. Do the numbers to see if there are cost/time savings to flying into Milan, versus flying into Venice. The most important thing is to not arrive in Italy the day the tour starts or you'll be zonked by jet lag.

Thank you!
Yes I guess depends on airfare so at least an overnight in Milan then wake up refreshed and check in night before our tour in Vencie if possible!

Any tips :)

Delta has nonstop flights from JFK to Venice and Rome. You could get a multi-city (aka open jaw) ticket for JFK-Venice and Rome-JFK. There are also nonstop flights from JFK to Milan which would be cheaper than the Venice or Rome flights.

Kayak.com shows nonstops from JFK to VCE and from FCO to JFK on KLM/Delta, and from EWR to VCE and FCO to EWR on Lufthansa. For less money there are other choices involving layovers in Amsterdam, Lisbon, Paris, Dublin, and even (not recommended) Moscow. Probably Frankfurt too though I didn't see it. And London, which I used to get to and from the same tour last month (from Seattle).

You'll love the tour. Try to schedule as many days before and after as you can, not only to beat jet lag but also because there's so much to see that the tour doesn't cover.

Assuming your flight lands in the morning, you can take the train to Venice on the same day. The only advantage I see to an overnight in Milan is the flexibility to purchase train tickets to Venice in advance and save money. The full price ticket is €45, buying months in advance, you can pay less than half that. It's about an hour train or bus ride from Malpensa airport to the Milan train station, and a 2.5 hour ride to Venice. If you stay overnight in Milan, that means extra time to check in/out of your hotel. Also, if you spend the day in Milan, you have to return to your hotel to pick up your bags before going to the train station. It's less hassle IMO to go straight to Venice. The train is very comfortable and if you sit on the left (north) side, you'll have some views of the Alps in the distance.

I'm puzzled why this is a problem? We can't fly non-stop to Italy from our U.S. location and neither can many other Americans. Shoot, we can't fly non-stop just anywhere in the U.S.. Layovers are not a complication as long as they aren't too short or too long, especially if the ticket price is more attractive. Am I missing something?

How exciting! You’re going to fall in love with Europe and Italy.

Are you locked into July? That’s when it will be the most crowded.

Even if you can’t get the cheapest price on a non-stop flight from your airport, I’d go with non-stop to Venice over connections or flying into Milan.

For myself, I’m with Kathy-the only non-stop from my local airport is to Salt Lake City. I don’t have a choice on changing planes but I’ve learned to give myself generous transfer times.
