Hello! I really want to see the Fra Mauro Mappa Mundi. I did go to the Museo Correr and couldn't find it (but didn't ask anyone as it was near closing time). I then went to the Library of St Mark, as advised from a google search, but the doorperson insisted I had to go back to the Museo Correr. If you have managed to see this antique marvel, where do you go to find it?
The Fra Mauro Mappa Mundi is kept in the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana ( aka the “Sansovino Library”). The address is San Marco 7.
Yes, that is where we tried to enter and were turned away. The website is not working today, so I can't look into entry requirements.
Wow! The one other bit of info I read on the www.venice-museum.com website is that the location is in the “New Attorney’s Offices.”
You might try showing a photo of the map to an official outside the building and see if they can point you in the right direction.
Quite surprisingly Google is wrong and, not surprisingly, the doorperson was right.
The Fra' Mauro's Map is housed in the Monumental Hall of the Library, but you can't get there through the main entrance of the Library used by students & citizens.
You can reach those rooms only through the Museo Correr: https://correr.visitmuve.it/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/MAPPA-PERCORSI-DI-VISITA-MUSEO-CORRER-2025.pdf Assuming the Mappa Mundi is back from Australia.
https://www.venice-museum.com/ is not an official site and it seems to be based on google translate: those rooms were new around 1600 CE and the Procuratori of the Most Serene Republic of Venice were not Attorneys. They were members of the Senate who administered trust funds and were responsible for the manteinance of the public buildings near San Marco Square. The Monumental Hall of the Marciana Library was their office, more or less.
