venice

We are plannig on visiting Italy with our adult children (23,24)
We are staying for 10 days, planning on 3 nights in Rome, One night in Siena, one night in Volterra and then 3 in Venice. Any opinions on The 3 nights in Venice? Is this longer than we need? Would we do better to stay one night somewhere else? We will be flying into Rome and out of Venice so don't need to do any back tracking Thanks.

Thank you all for you advise. I am having a hard time finding something in Volterra anyway, the two nights in Siena sounds like a good idea with a trip to volterra during the day. Thanks again for all the great advice! Sandy

3 nights in Venice gives you 2 full days there. I'd say 3 nights is a bare minimum. Your one night stays in Siena and Volterra: why? They are close. You could stay in one for two nights and easily visit the other. I am not a fan of one night stays. It just takes too much time and energy to pack, check out, travel, unpack, reorient. If you can stay in one place at least two nights, it's a much better experience with less stress and lost time.

What Laurel said. I'm so glad you're planning to spend time in Venice. By the way, the best time to visit the Basilica is from 11.30-12.30, when the wonderful mosaics are floodlit.

We recently visited Venice with our grown daughter, 3 nights on one end of a cruise and another night on the return. 3 nights is bare minimum. Do search out a church to hear Verdi played one night, it is magic. Lots of tourists, but also, you can walk a short distance and find yourself in another very quiet area. Burano (island) is FUN to visit, very colorful and great photo ops. Murano quite commercial, but most of us must see. Not much glass blowing happening when we visited. We found a little no star hotel, had the attic room and were awakened daily to the sound of seagulls. Not what I expected after spending the two nights of my first trip hearing lots of people and commotion in the more touristy, expensive section. Have fun!

Definitely two nights in Siena instead of one in Volterra. Three nights minimum in Venice. If it's your first time, I wouldn't bother with the lagoon islands (Murano, Burano). They're charming enough, but can't compare to Venice itself. That said, if you find yourself a little tired of Venice, you can always do a spur of the moment trip to the other islands. Here are some photos of both Venice and the islands from our trip in May 2008, in case you're interested. Be sure to wander away from the crowds. Some people think all of Venice is crowded based only on their experience in St. Mark's and Rialto, but as you can see from some pictures I took this past May, you can easily find uncrowded Venice if you just wander away from the hordes. Happy travels.
