We are staying in Milan from August 26 until September 3. is it possible to visit Venice for a day and a half and spend the night of the 27 there then take train back to Milan on the mid day on the 28th? I heard that accommodation is tight due to film festival? Alternatives?

Booking can indeed be tight. But what the heck! Try e-mailing hotels you like. Look at availabilities onTripadvisor, etc. Just get it locked in now.

I would recommend booking.com and venere.com over Tripadvisor which is notorious for fake reviews. The reviews at booking.com and venere.com, on the other hand, can be made only by the people who definitely stayed at the place.

TripAdvisor Fake Reviews... Notorious - probably so, but fairly easy to spot usually because the reviewer only has 1 review or post to his name. Look for the reviews from people who have left lots and lots of feedback...like me. To the OP: Unless you're in Milan for business there are lots better places in Italy to visit...like Venice. Can you whack off some of those Milan days???

The film fesitival is actually held on Lido and doesn't normally get that crowded unless a huge star is appearing that night. Even then, it doesn't affect hotels too much so you should be able to find a place pretty easily.
