I'm planning a 4 week trip to Italy and want to start the trip the last week of August in Venice and then move on to the Dolomites. I know August is not a great month for travel in Italy but has anyone travelled to Italy in August and if so, can you give me first hand accounts of how it was? We plan to drive in the Dolomites and I'm wondering if we'll encounter crazy traffic since it is probably a popular vacation spot for Italians. Thanks for any input you can provide.

Hi Sheron, I can't imagine you'll encounter "crazy traffic" in the Dolomites. We've been to the Dolomites in mid Sept. '09 and in Oct. in '03, '05 and '06. On our Sept. '09 trip we didn't encounter any traffic, let alone "crazy traffic", anywhere in the Dolomites. Actually, it was pretty quiet, very much like our October trips. It seems that you'll be in Venice the first week (last week of Aug.), so you wouldn't be in the Dolomites until the first week of Sept. Personally, I wouldn't be concerned with crowds or traffic problems in the Dolomites at all. Paul
