venice-doges palace--do I need advance tickets for mid-Aug?

If we just want to go to Doges Palace and not the Secret tour, is there any reason to buy in advance? Do they ever run out of tickets? How long is the line over at Correr mid-morning on a Sunday in the summer? thanks, Elaine

We did this tour last November, it was very interesting. Yes I would defiantly buy in advance. The tickets do sell out and you would avoid the long line up to buy tickets. Go for it

We just went in July. Venice was very crowded, but we walked right into the palace. Maybe a five minute line. If there is a time associated with the tickets I would not buy them. I would prefer flexibility.

yes, that's our problem. It appears with the prebooked tickets, you have to select a day--and we don't know if we will go on Sunday or Monday. I don't want to miss it, but also want some flex.

If I were you, I would get one of these, http://www.veniceconnected.com/node/1583
Prpbably the St. Marks 3-month one. It would give you the flexibility you want, allow you to bypass lines ad also to go to other places in St. Marks Square. I also found if you go later in the afternoon, the crowds are much lighter.

Visited a few years ago in early July and walked right in a couple of hours before closing...didn't need a reservation. There was no line and not many people inside. You might be able to do the same sort of thing and avoid huge lines while having a decent visit sans a lot of tourists. Check it out about two hours before closing on your first day in Venice to get a feel for whether or not this might work for you when you're there.
