This time visit Torcello. Verona would make a good daytrip. so would Padova.

Verona is wonderful. You'll definitely enjoy it. Padova is also wonderful and a good day trip. Torcello is interesting if you want to see old Christian mosaics and if you want to see what the original Venetian islands looked like before they were settled. It's not for everyone. It's more of a half-day trip.

Which one you would enjoy most depends on your interests. Verona and Padova both have a little of everything. Torcello is a one-trick pony.

I was just looking at pictures of Verona and it looks so beautiful. I wonder how long the trip will take? Is it by train? Thanks.

Easily done by train - about and hour and fifteen minutes or so, if I recall correctly.

You can buy your Trenitalia tickets in advance, taking advantage of their advance booking or 2-for-1 fares. I think that we were on a convenient 9:30 p.m. return.

When you get to Verona, walk towards the Roman arena. In front is the tourist information office, from which you can pick up a map and walking tour info.

Verona is well worth a day trip! While there, try to eat at the Antica Bottega del Vino for lunch or an early dinner (they can do 6 p.m.).

Yes, both Verona and Padova are done by train from Venezia Santa Lucia station. (That's the one on the island of Venice, as opposed to Venezia Mestre which is on the mainland). The station in Verona is Verona Porta Nuova.

Use the trenitalia.com website to look into tickets. If you want to wait until you're there to decide whether to day trip to Verona (which would be my recommendation), you can buy tickets on the Regionale Veloce train instead of the Freccia bullet train after you're in Venice. The difference is only 17 minutes. There's a Regionale Veloce train that leaves Venice at 8:12 and arrives in Verona at 9:30. It costs only 7.60 euros 2nd class. There's a return RV train at 22:21 for the same price, getting you into VSL at 23:48, if you want to do a long day in Verona.

Agree with Michael. Take the Regionale Veloce and save money. The time difference is not enough to justify the extra expense on a Freccia. Also no need to pre-purchase a regionale train because there are no discounts on regionali and there is no fear of selling out. Just buy the tickets on the spot or the day before. Regionali work like subway trains or commuter trains. Just get the ticket, validate it at the machine just before boarding and get on. No reservations required and even if all seats are taken, you can still get on board and stand up. Verona is well worth a mass.

if you are going somewhere else before or after Venice, it may be better to plan to stop in Verona en route for the day (leaving luggage at the train station). Many of the train routes go through it. You can also see Padua that way.

Sally,

We will be in Venice for 7 nights, and will take a day trip to both Verona and Padua, probably separate days--they both sound wonderful! But if I were in Venice for 3 1/2 days, I would just stay in Venice.

Thanks so much . We would do a daytrip to Verona as we would be in Venice for four days.
Thanks also for the detail about the train to go there. As of now, it sounds kind of confusing but I think it will make sense once we are there.
