Venice day 1-Do I have enough time?

This is such a great forum! I’m getting the best helpful advice!
Ok… I arrive in Venice airport at 9:35 am traveling with carry on only. I’ve arranged water taxi transport to my hotel near Rialto bridge. These are my plans:

12:00 tickets s-St Marks
1:00 tickets Doges Palace
5:00 food and wine tour (meeting at Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena)

I’d love to fit in San Zaccaria after Doges palace
But not sure how long Doges palace takes. I’m not doing a guided tour. Rick Steves says allow 1.5 hr. If this is right I can probably do San Zuccaria since it is a 4 minute walk.

What are peoples experience with length of non guided Doges visit and do you think my day plan is possible. I know it’s a lot. I better sleep on the plane!!

It is possible IF your plane is on time and Passport Control moves quickly. Those noon tickets are the most worrisome in case you are late. Doges Palace I doubt will take more than an hour, so maybe slip St. Mark’s an hour (assume you are reserving in advance as is highly recommended) and then the Doge’s Palace to follow. Self tour shouldn’t take more than an hour, IMO.

If you are arriving on a flight from the US, are you sure you will have the energy to do all this?

I’m with Cala. Yes, you could conceivably do all of this on day 1, but I’m not sure you’d fully appreciate what you’re seeing or enjoy doing so much. How many days do you have in Venice? If you’ve got more than 1, I’d suggest bumping all of these activities to day 2. On day one, find a cafe and enjoy a cappuccino and something to eat, then hop back on the vaporetto and follow Rick’s self guided tour. If you can work your way to the front of the boat, the ride itself is a fantastic experience, plus the fresh air will keep you awake and help with jet lag. Later in the day, after the day trippers have left, walk to Saint Marks Square and enjoy the experience of just being there—it’s really jaw dropping—when it’s not teeming with tourists. Venice is magical in the evenings and very early morning. Then make it an early night and start your planned activities very early on day 2.

I’m not sure, but in past visits to Europe I’ve pushed through day one and pass out dead tired that night. Seems to correct jet lag.

You're going to do this right after a long international flight?? Oof. If you're going to drop off your bag at your hotel before going to St. Marks, know it's highly unlikely you can check in that early. So you won't have the opportunity to freshen up after overnight travel (something I consider essential). I don't see any part of your plan that has you return to the hotel to check in later, you'll need to account for that.

All of the activities you have planned will also require transportation between them, make sure to factor in enough time to get from one place to another (that church isn't remotely close to St. Marks/Doges, and the nearest vaporetto stop is quite a walk). Also, a "4 minute walk" in Venice assumes you don't get lost (but you will, it happens even when you're not jet lagged).

I have three days. Also day two I will be going to Padua for 1/2 day to see the Giotto frescos. In the morning will go to academy gallery. Day three mass at St marks, Frari and San Rocco then opera 7:00 pm.
Guests if I miss St Marks day one will see at mass.
It’s a lot I’m attempting to accomplish!

Oh so I guess I can’t rely on the walking times that iPhone map app gives me for Venice? That’s how I’m factoring in distances

My caution about the walk time wasn't a reflection in the iPhone accuracy - I didn't have one of those when I visited - rather that Venice can be confusing with or without a mapping device. Plus, you'll want to actually look around and not race from point to point - it's a stunningly beautiful city.

If you're used to the pace of travel you've outlined, then by all means go for it. I'd have a plan B though just in case something goes awry (late flights, train delays, etc.) and as Laurel suggested above, push your arrival day plans out a bit for cushion.

No, maps apps aren’t accurate in Venice. It’s approximate and not good at that. So double your walking time. Know that you will get lost and it may take double the doubled time.

I’m going back to Venice next year for my third visit. The more I visit the more I learn that Venice is meant to be savored, not rushed through.

I’m a bit of a Renaissance art fanatic which explains my dashing around. I do love food, wine and enjoying the city as well so hope I can have both😊

I think one hour for San Marco is awfully short. You should see the museum while you're there.

Agree with horsewoofie that Venice is not to be rushed through. When we went a couple of years ago the most enjoyable times were when we just wandered the streets with no specific itinerary or goal in mind. It's a pleasure to get lost and stumble upon an unplanned treasure. One day there was this marvelous street performer singing opera and we stopped to enjoy for at least a half hour.

Yes. That’s why there’s chocolate and vanilla. Personally I would not miss a Bellini. Titian or Tintoretto for a the chance of seeing a random street performance. I’m sure I will be seeing beauty in all directions when I follow my “hopefully accurate ” haha! directions. I think I’ve planned some nice dining as well and I will ask concierge and my food and wine tour guide for recommendations. Thank you all for your wonderful advice! I will be flexible and try to prioritize what is most important for me to see and adapt as I go.
