Popular sites include the Rialto Bridge and market, st. Mark's Basilica, the Doges Palace.
More info here.
Have you got the guidebook? If not you can download it as a Kindle. Loads of good info for exactly your questions.
Go to a "Tourist Information" location or ask your hotel for suggestions/answers for all of your questions
Definitely the Guggenheim..the kids will love the Marini's.
Seriously....is this late planning? Hit the basics and wander....and with two kids along, ride the Vapperetos everywhere.
As Nigel said, you really should consult a guidebook. Here is an itinerary idea from this website’s host Rick Steves Venice Itinerary.
Venice restaurant have been covered endlessly on this site. You could use the search bar above and type in “Venice restaurants” or “Venice dining”.
We spent a day taking the boat to the Cemetery Island (sorry I forgot the name) very beautiful and interesting - beautifully maintained and several very famous people buried there.....
then on to Murano - walked around saw the glass blowing and enjoyed a nice lunch, then back on a boat to Burano (my favorite) famous for lace making and the colorfully painted houses.
Then took the boat back to Venice.
When I say boat - it is more of a transportation service - nice roomy ferry type boat.
Theres a good section on kids in Venice in the travel guide Venice in a Day
