Venice/CT/Rome

Staying in 3 major cities in 10 days. Venice 2 nights, Cinqueterre 2 nights, and 5 nights in Rome...Is it too ambitious? We are also thinking of a day trip to Florence and maybe Bologna? Thoughts?

3 places in 9 nights is not tooo bad, but the CT is a long trip from Venice for only 2 nights. Are you starting in Venice upon arrival from the US? You might consider 3 nights in Venice since your first day will be a bit of a wash from travel and jetlag. Florence and Bologna are not really day-trips from any of the locations you list. I love Rome and I think 5 nights is perfect, but if you only have 9 nights, maybe Venice 3, Rome 4 and Florence OR Bologna for 2 would be a reasonable mix. You could also slow it down a bit and stay only two places: Venice and Rome. Make a list of what you want to see and do in each place and let that help you determine how many nights to stay in each. Good lukc! It is so hard to narrow down an itinerary.

I don't know how comfortable you are with a travel day side trip, but on you way from Venice to either CT or Rome, you could visit Bologna or Florence. If you catch an early train to Bologna or Florence and leave your bags at the station you can enjoy several hours in the city and take an afternoon train to your next destination. It will put you in later in the evening of either destination, but you will not end up paying extra train fare for a day trip, and you will break up a long train day.

On your way to the CT from Venice, you will most likely change trains in Florence. Most runs do. There are a few runs that route via Parma and Bologna.
