Venice: Corte Campana OR Alloggi Barbaria

Hello Venetian Travelers,
My husband and I will be in Venice 31 Oct 07-02 Nov 07. At present we will either stay at BB Corte Campana or Alloggi Barbaria.
The price is the same for both locations per night. Both seem to be close to one another and the main attractions. The issue is that Alloggi Barbaria looks cleaner and newer vs the ambiance of BB Corte Campana.

My main concern is that after a day of sight seeing we want to stay in a clean, comfortable and quite room.

Any suggestions?

I don't know anything about Alloggi Barbaria, but I stayed at Corte Campana for 3 nights last month. It was by far the worst B&B experience I've ever had.

The room was never cleaned (beds not made, trash never taken out), the bathroom had a foul odor and was very moldy, linens were old and stained, and there were dozens of mosquitos that ate us alive and buzzed around us at night.

On the good side, the location was excellent and the room was very large, though it was so depressing that we never wanted to spend too much time there. I know most reviews on Trip Advisor and this website rave about Corte Campana, but IMHO I think they are mostly raving about the charming Riccardo, not the actual accomodations. I think with some elbow grease and new linens, this place would be great. It's a shame, really.

Anyway, just my opinion.

I thank you as well - it was on our short list and we'll avoid it!

If you also do a search of Alloggi Barbaria on this site you will see very favorable reviews of it.

Hi Venetian Travelers,

My husband and I decided on Alloggi Barbaria. We really enjoyed how quite the area was. It was removed from the hustle in bustle but was only a few stops away. Fausto was amazing. He provided great insight to the local sites directing us to the best restaurants in town. I would highly recommend it. Please note US Standards, meaning the star rating is very different abroad. The rooms were large and very clean. One final thought, I would visit Venice during the week. Once the weekend rolled around the "touristy" side of Venice emerged. It was not as delightful. Good luck with your planning and enjoy this magical city!

My opinion was based on 2 friends whom stayed at Alloggi and had a bad experience. I guess to each's own, but was told the location was great.

Has anyone had a good experience at Corte Campana? I have reservations there for next October. Please let me know if I've made a mistake! Thanks.

My husband and I just returned from a fantastic 3 days-4 nights in Venice. When I signed on, it was so I could share our wonderful experience at Corte Campana, so I decided to begin with this thread.

Clean? Absolutely, in fact, I noticed a fresh scent when we entered, and I have a good nose! The bed was large and comfortable and the bathroom was also large and immaculately clean. Terrific shower, too. It was extremely convenient and also very quiet, especially considering how close it is to Piazzo San Marco.

Yes, Riccardo is charming, AND he is a veritable fountain of information, all of it excellent.

A b & b in America is quite different than many b & bs in Europe; they don't always make the bed for you. The waste basket was emptied and towels changed after our second night, which was fine (there was a heated towel rack so they were dry and toasty warm the next morning).

I can't speak to Beth's experience, but if it was as bad as it sounds, all I can say is, that was not our experience at all. I realize it's too late for Paula but I felt that I needed to put in my 2¢ worth : )

As a follow-up to my posting of planning to stay at Corte Campana, we did stay there for four days last October and it was the highlight of our trip. The B&B is up four flights of stairs, so be prepared for that hike. But once there, the rooms are quite large and clean. I had no concerns about mold or smells while there. The trash was emptied daily and fresh towels were always available, simply by asking. And yes, Riccardo is a wonderful, funny, warm and considerate host. It is goal in life for you to love Venice and he does all in his power to accomplish that. He is charming as well as his B&B. I would stay there again without question.

Hi, We spent six fabulous nights in Venice this January 2010 and stayed at BB Corte Campana with our two children ages 10 & 12. It was fantastic.

The room was huge and he had just bought new mattresses, which were really comfortable, and we were toasty warm. The place is impeccably clean and well maintained.

Having stayed at a European B&B before, I had no expectation that my bed would be made for me; it's not a hotel. They did change our towels for us half way through which I appreciated.

As others have posted, Ricardo is one of the many gems of Venice and very helpful. I felt like I was staying with an old friend instead of in an impersonal hotel.
