Venice/Cinque Terre/ Florence/ Sorrento/ Rome

Hello.

What is the best way to travel from Venice to Cinque Terre? Hotel Recommendation for family of four?

We then will travel to Florence from Cinque Terre. What is the best way to do that travel? After we leave Florence we would like to see Sorrento (Pompeii) (advice on hotels here for our family (boys are 10 and 12)

Last bit of travel would be from Sorrento to Rome. Again what is the best way to do this traveling?

Comments on the itinerary? We have from June 12th to June 30th to do this. (summer of 2009) We would like to spend the most "time" in Rome.

My thoughts are...
Venice 3 nights, CT 3 nights, Florence 4 nights, Sorrento 3 nights and Rome for 6 nights.

Doable? Too much? What would you change? (4 nights in Florence because kids want to do day trip to Pisa)

We drove from Venice to Cinque Terra with an overnight stop in Modena. It's a long drive. I notice Rick's tours go from Venice to Florence then back up to CT, that might be a more manageable trip.

In CT, we didn't call ahead. We were offered a place at the train station, looked at it and turned it down because it was too small. We then went to one of the hotels and told them what we needed. A few women had a discussion in the street then took us to a nice two bedroom apartment (no view) for a reasonable price.

The itinerary sounds great (you knew that I would think so!).

As for lodging in Sorrento, check out Il Nido and La Tonnarella.

Il Nido is more economical, but farther from town. La Tonnarella has its own private beach (which is what sold us on staying there on our upcoming trip). La Tonnarella also has a family suite, which is ideal for our family of 5.

Both have free on-site parking, if you'll have a car. And, both have on-site restaurants, which can be great at the end of a long day of sightseeing.

I had a feeling you would like it :)
thank you for the hotel information.

You're welcome. The only thing that I would change is that I would make Pisa a stop when travelling between CT and Florence, rather than a day trip from Florence. You'll pass right through anyway.

Hi Viv,
May I highly suggest the following private rooms. I don't know if you have any little ones and if so, this won't do. But if you have the "family of four" as I did, this works out wonderfully. There was my husband & I and also my son & his wife. Elisabetta Villino Azzurro in the CT is absolutely perfect. Everyone talks about wonderful places to stay in the CT but why would you want to stay in a place with such beauty and get rooms with no view. Elisabetta rents 3 rooms....the top two rooms share a rooftop terrace with a 360 degree view over the sea, the castle, and the village. I tell you enough how much you will love this. The rooms are small but very clean. We spent a couple hrs each afternoon, after a day of hiking, relaxing with a bottle of wine and again in the evening watching the sunset. We felt like royalty! And to make this even more desirable, her cost was only 65 Euros per room when we were there May 8 & 9. (www.elisabettacarro.it) mobile: #347-451-1834

We took a train from Venice to the CT and it was a long trip. We went from Venice to Milan to Genoa to Monteresso to Vernazza. there was a train that went from Milan straight to Monteresso, but I think they discontinued it because on the departures list at the Milan train station there was a blank piece of paper taped over the listing.
Long trip to get there, but worth it!!

We will be driving from Cinque Terre (Vernazza) to Venice in a day, exploring along the way. I think that it's only 6 hours or so, without stops, depending upon how you go.
