Venice - Church of St. Zacharias (Atlas Obscura entry)

Hi all,

I'm a big fan of "underground" or as Rick Steve's would say, backdoor experiences. One website I use that provides a lot of good material of this type is Atlas Obscura. However, sometimes sights are listed there because they are odd (or bonus material), not necessarily because they are hidden gems.

Atlas Obscura recommends the flooded crypt of St. Zacharias Church. http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-flooded-crypt-of-san-zaccaria

For those of you that have been, is it a hidden gem or odd, but not worth the time (when time is limited)?

Grazie!

Melissa

We went ! But we love odd and obscure. The church was on one of the Venice walks that Rick has in his Venice book and we did every walk and enjoyed each one. So we didn't spend an afternoon hunting it out - we walked in and checked it out and headed to the next location on his "walk".

Thanks Carla! Sounds like it's a quick in and out if you're walking by anyway.

We love finding odd gems ! Like John the Baptist's skull in a Roman church....real or not, we feel like Indiana Jones when we finally find a place that was on our list !

I found it interesting, and have returned to view the crypt again. I don't think it's a hidden gem, because it's a rock crypt, but definitely interesting and worth the time spent if you're in the area.

A real gem, but not hidden, is the church Santa Maria dei Miracoli - it's gorgeous!
