For some of the balls I think you would want a full costume,as that is the fun of it. A few years ago we went to what was called A Hot Chocolate Ball, (or something like that) It was about $150 and the cheapest one we could find. We expected a cup of hot chocolate, but didn't care as we wanted to go. It was delightful... there was a concert in a beautiful private home (large) and a 'hot chocolate fountain' and beautiful desserts, cookies and fruit to dip in the chocolate and wine. We all had costumes, but mine was very simple... I had a long black silk skirt, and a beautiful velvet cloak as well as my amazing mask that I bought in Venice. My friends also all brought costumes and we had a great time. As silly as it seems to take up space in your suitcase with a costume it was definitely a part of the magic. Neither me nor any of my friends speak Italian.
