Rick says in his book that with the four big/grand hotels he had listed often if you go in the off-season (like we are in August) you can often get huge discounts. I checked the websites and he was right- normally DB priced at $400 Euro was $150 Euro. Do you think it is worth the risk? If we show up and these places arent having a special or are full we would be completely out of luck. Have any of yall experienced this? A hotel being so empty they practically give rooms away? Please give me your input on this one... Florence and Venice are expensive!
If I read you note right you are going in August and August IS peak season in Venice. You should plan on reserving way in advance. Some locations like Venice and Florence travelers should always have reservations anyway. These are very busy tourist cities most of the yr. I always travel in Italy in Aug and I reserv by April or before. If you still want to try go thru orbitz or expedia websites for your deals.
JS is right August is right in the middle of high season. I would definately book in advance if you plan to go to Venice then. It is a really popular destination and you may find real trouble getting accommodation.
August is not high season in Venice. May/June and September/October is high season. The big cities are too hot in the summer and everyone heads to resort towns. However Venice is busy all year so definitely book in advance.
