I'm planning a trip for some family members who will only be in Venice for 2 night pre and 1 night post cruise. One of the folks has bad knees so I don't want to make him walk too far. Is it best for them to get a hotel in the Piazzale Roma area so they can take a land shuttle from the airport? Plus, it's close to the cruise port. Or, would it be well worth their while to stay in the St. Marks area? Thanks!
If you can afford the St Marks area stay there for the 2 night precruise and stay in P. Roma for the 1 night postcruise. Walking can be difficult in Venice, narrow, cobbled, alleys, ped. bridges. And to boat ride back and forth is tiring and jolting on legs. Make sure hotel has an elevator also. You are very wise to plan ahead.
Bear in mind that traveling to and from St. Mark's by vaporetto isn't that easy on the knees, either. Boarding can be a bit tricky and then if the boat is crowded, much of the ride can be standing room only.
