I'd like to see the Basilica San Marco when it is lit up, which I understand is only from 11:30-12:30. Because you have to wait in line for the Basilica, and then have to walk through in only 10 minutes, timing a visit to coincide with the light-up time seems rather tricky. One thought I had is to take the guided tour of the Basilica, which seems to run at 11am and lasts an hour - which would include the period when the Basilica is lit up (I think the tour only runs Tuesday through Thursday). The Basilica website lists a phone number to call for info about the tour, but there doesn't seem to be any way to make a reservation. Any suggestions as to how to arrange a visit so that we can see the Basilica when it is lit up, or take the tour? I've read Rick's advice about checking bags and skipping the line - but somewhere it says there is a one hour limit on the baggage check, and if the tour takes one hour, and we also spend time visiting the Basilica's museum, we'll end up leaving the bag for more than one hour. What happens? Do they throw the bag out?
I don't know about the tour, but I can tell you that I've left my bag for longer than an hour and it wasn't a problem. In fact, nothing was mentioned about the hour limit when I left my bag.
The Basilica is lit from 11:30 to 12:30 at night. It is only open during the day so you can not. We were at the Basilica around opening time and had a very short wait.
we used the bag check which Rick mentions and I know we were more than an hour. We visited the basilica and the museum. Not a problem. We were able to walk around the basilica without any time limits.
As far as the lighting we had not planned for it but we were there sometime during the morning hours and it was lit up while we were upstairs in the museum so it must be 11:30am-12:30pm.
