Mea: Usually the words "Venice - nice hotel - inexpensive" don't go together. Especially when the euro price you see x 1.48 = the dollars you actually pay. Venice has some of the highest hotel rates in Europe. I do hope someone here can come up with something that is nice, inexpensive, and in Venice. I don't know of any. A quick look through Rick's book "Italy" does not come up with any that are in Venice and what most people would consider "inexpensive," once the euro rate is translated to dollars. Venere.com is a website to try. One option is to stay outside Venice and commute in for the day, but there is a non-monetary cost to that option (missing the nights and waking up in Venice).

wow, inexpensive less than $100 dollars is very difficult in Venice. be more specific as to your rate. you might also consider adjacent Mestre if Venice is too expensive the good thing you are going mostly shoulder season unless its Easter, then good luck.

I highly recommend Locanda Orseolo - on a small canal near St. Mark's Square, yet in its own very quiet courtyard. Check out Tripadviser.com - it's the highest rated B&B in Venice.

You have options in Venice itself. Don't stay in Mestre or you'll miss some of the best charm of Venice by being able to be there at night when the tour buses are gone.

Venere.com is a great resource. I liked the Hotel Santa Lucia very near the train station. It has a website to check rates.

I had a nice stay at the Hotel Tivoli in Dorsoduro in October. Great location in a neighborhood with lots of local restaurants, shops, relatively untouristy for Venice. 72euros for a single - you get a discount if you pay cash. Reserved my room through Venere.com, and they also have reviews posted there as well. Tripadvisor also a good source for reviews as well.

Look up Gli Angeli in Venice for a nice/inexpensive (October, 2007)and by the Arsanale. It was away from the "crowds" but in walking distance to San Marco Square. Sonia was very pleasant and the room very nice. Not much of a breakfast but we could see a "side" canal from the window.
Don't know what the rates would be for Spring.

I recommend Domus Orsoni. I stayed there in March 2007 and really liked it. The price was 60 Euro per person. Samantha Brown did a segment on it.

If your looking for good accomadations at a fair price look at Venice Mestre, its only 10 minutes from the Island of Venice. There are many nice hotels to choose from and it's just far enough away from the touristy high prices.

I've got to disagree with Greg. (Sorry, Greg.) Don't stay in Mestre. As stated earlier, the charm of Venice shines in the evening, when you don't have to worry about getting back to your hotel on the mainland. Yes, Venice is pricey, but it's worth it. Scrimping to save on lodging by staying on the mainland could end up making your whole Venice experience a waste of money.

I agree. Don't stay in Mestre. It may be a little less expensive but does not have the ambience of Venice.

Definitely don't waste your time in Mestre unless you just absolutely don't have the money for a hotel on the island of Venice. Mestre is such a let-down. Yes, I wasted 2 nights in Mestre and after that we only stay on the island.

Also, Pensione Guerrato has double rooms (shared bath down the hall) near the Rialto Bridge for 95E. The room we had last time had its own sink in the room, which was very useful. And they do a slight discount (maybe 10E) if you pay cash. A decent breakfast is included. And they're absolutely wonderful people. (They're the ones that Rick Steves raves about and where his tour groups stay when they're in town.)

It's hard to find a much lower rate in Venice proper at a nice place in a good location. (Domus Orsoni recommended above actually charges between 100E and 250E for a double. Sheri's post says they were charged 60E "per person" but most places in Italy base their rates on the room, not the number of occupants.)
