Venice Arrival to San Marco/ San Zaccaria

In reading Risk's guide book, I learned that there is an express Vaporetto from Piazzale Roma to San Marco, through the Grand Canal.

It looks like I can turn right when exiting the train station and walk about 300 yards to the boat dock. We will be arriving in Venice on May 30 about noon. Our hotel is an easy walk from San Marco Zaccaria, so I think it would be a grand way to get our first taste of Venice.

My question is ... what I should expect with regard to crowds? Should I expect to wait at the boat dock for an extended period? Or, just a packed boat and maybe have to wait for the next one 10 to 15 minutes later. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this route in early summer.

The number one vaporetto stops at every dock between the two. It takes longer, but gives you more time to enjoy the views. The number two only stops at about half of the docks and is maybe 15 or 20 minutes faster. Hard to say which will be more crowded.

Not sure what you mean by "express Vaporetto". The boat to San Zaccaria from Ferrovia on the Grand Canal is the No 1 and it makes all the stops, taking 46 minutes. Yes, it is usually crowded at mid-day.

The No 2 only goes as far as San Marco Giardinetta with a fairly long walk over a few bridges to San Zaccaria

Sam,

According to Rick's Venice book, " From late May to mid- Sept line #2 also runs an express route up and down the Grand Canal between Piazzale Roma and the San Marco/ San Zaccaria (35 minutes). "

I'll send an email to the tourist office to see if that remains a summer standard.

From Ferrovia to San Zach, the No 1 will be quicker.

The boat docks are right in front of the train station. Turning right and walking 300 yards would take you over the Ponte della Constituzione to Piazzale Roma. There are boat docks there as well. In fact, the No 1 boat originates there, so if you wanted to be one of the first people on board to get your choice seat, you could do that.

The boat schedules are at https://avm.avmspa.it/en/content/orari-servizio-di-navigazione-0
with the pdf file all the way to the right on the page. There is no effective date referenced on these, so maybe check when you are close to your travel date.

From Ferrovia to San Zaccaria, you can take a No 1, 2, 5.1 or 4.1 vaporetto. 5.1 and 4.1 are fastest, at about 25 minutes. No 1 and 2 are almost the same, 48 and 46 minutes respectively.

the reason that the faster vaporettos are faster is that they don't go down the Grand Canal but around the bottom of the islands, so you can choose between speed and iconic views

I did notice that on google maps, the No 2 connection between Giardanetta and San Zaccaria is shown as "seasonal".
