was in rome last oct 2008 for 5 days and found a private apartment very reasonable in center of piazza navona area. they do have listings for venice at freereservation.com haven't been there but you can look at what they have at that website. good luck and happy travels

vrbo.com have excellent listings for Venice. We've booked listing #155941 which has been recommended by someone who's just been there from USA and they said it's excellent in position and value.

We rented a two-bedroom apartment through Hotel d'Art. It was comfortable and clean but Spartan and tucked away in an alley (no view) but was perfect for us and our kids. It was close to Rialto and an easy walk to the water busses or San Marco. The price was very reasonable.
For a budget option, give them a call.

The Hotel Campiello has several apartments in Venice and you cannot get more central than that.
