Venice Apartment Recommendations for One-Month Stay

We are planning to spend a month in Venice in October, 2013. I am starting to gather information and recommendations on apartments now, as we have family and friends going to Italy at various times this spring and fall, and they can check out the location and other aspects for us. I have looked at VRBO and Homeaway, and read recommendations, looked at photos, etc. But it is still very helpful to have personal recommendations. We would like a two-bedroom apartment, hopefully with 2 bathrooms but can make do with one. A one-bedroom with comfortable sofabed in the living room would also work.
We would particularly love to have a terrace, altana, or at a minimum a balcony; we like to sit outside. Canal view would be great, but a view over the rooftops is OK too. For decor, we prefer modern and airy to ornate and traditional. We don't mind being high up in a building with no elevator. As for location, we have stayed previously in Dorsoduro and like it a lot, but we are open to other sestrieri. Thanks for your help!

Okay, first, dying of envy. Second, have you tried the SlowTravel forum and website? They focus a lot on extended stays, and have lots of information on apartments.

Hi Lola. First of all, thank you for your many helpful posts on this forum. Re: Venice apts. rental, we have booked one from Homeaway #333948 with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with showers, on a canal, washing machine and dishwasher in San Marco area. An embarrassment of riches. We have been dealing with Kimberly who has been very helpful answering our questions. Our rate in late April is Euro 160 plus cleaning fee. Her husband also has a powerboat and excursions are offered. If you would like feedback, we will be back home May 30. Feel free to PM me then.
Happy trip planning. Sherry

Try Venice Rentals (venicerentals.com), they've got a good selection, the owners are friends of ours and speak English fluently.

We stayed at the apartment that Sherry mentioned above - http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p333948 for three months over the holidays. We came back three weeks ago. I can definitely recommend this apartment. Don't hesitate to ask for the rate for a month's stay, should be a lot less than the daily rate.

Tthanks, everyone! Tthis is a good start. I like that Homeaway apartment, especially the wood beams in the ceiling. Is it on th eground floor? Which room has a view to the canal? Rik, I cannot find any photos on the venicerentals.com website. Do they send photos if I tell them what I am looking for? Michael-thanks for reminding me of SlowTrav. I found our Lucca apartment from a recommendation there

Homeaway apartment: The canal view is off the sitting/dining room. And it's on the ground floor - canal level.
