Venice and Verona help needed

We are traveling to Italy, Austria, Germany and Poland in June, one of my questions is Venice, many spots that have been recommended are full, if we are only going to be in Venice for 2 days should we stay in Venice or stay on the mainland and train/watertaxi in each day? I need some recommendations. Also we want to do a day trip into Verona (I am told it is an hour away?) should we day trip from our Venice location or plan to spend the night in Verona (just going for the Romeo and Juliet scene and to "look" around some) again any recommendations. Thanks everyone!

Keep trying to find a place in Venice because staying therer overnight is a great experience when the day trippers have left. Try building a list of hotels you'd like and e-mail a handful each night and wake up to find the responses. If you'll only have two days in Venice, I wouldn't use one for Verona. For what you're planning to do, stop by when you're moving on from Venice. Juliet's balcony is a bit of a hike from the train station, though.

While Verona is great, unless it's on your way, I would stick to Venice. Try a place like Venere that can show availability along with recommendations. With Venice, I wouldn't get hung up on which sestiere, just so long as you were in a sestiere.

With the short time you have in Venice, just stay in Venice. When looking for rooms, try to avoid Guidecca and the Lido. Nothing wrong with them, they are just removed enough from Venice proper that they are not as convenient.

You can stay in Padova, which is a 20 minute train ride from Venice and a quaint town, much less expensive than Venice.

For a good location one street off San Marcos square try
hotel ai do mori. The rooms were simple, you had to walk up stairs to get to the hotel. We loved the location and would go back again. We had two and a half days in Venice and could have spent more time. Wendy

Keep trying in Venice itself for hotels or apts. It is totally worth it to stay in Venice rather than on the mainland. Have you tried venere.com? 2 days is not too much for Venice. I'd recommend staying put and skipping Verona rather than doing a day trip.

Stay in Venice! The mainland near Venice is an industrial zone. I stayed at Loconda Casa Melangro, a small hotel in Cannareggio, just off the Grand Canal. Vaporretto (water bus) takes you to San Marco in about 20 minutes. You are also close to the Strada Nuova which is the main street between the railway station and Realto. So a great location. There are plenty of places to eat along the Strada and a supermarket about 10 mins walk away. Also in the same area is Hotel San Marcuola for about the same cost. Cannareggio is less touristy than the places closer to San Marco so prices are better. I book through Venere - easy to use as you can target the area of the city you want. 2 days is not enough for Venice - so forget going to Verona. Don't try and do everything in 2 days. But buy a Vaporetto pass (they come in various sorts) and hop on and off as needed. Take the trip to Murano (where they glass factories are) or to the Lido for a great sandy beach - they are all included. Beware - Venice is catching! You will want to go back, and go back and go back!
