Has anyone done both Padova and Verona in one day as sidetrips from Venice? Just wondering if it is too much to try and do both in one day.
Yes, you can. Padua is a short trip away from Venice, and it's about 10 minutes from the train station to the market squares and the adjacent loggia (worth seeing). The Scrovegni Chapel is beyond description, but remember you need a reservation long in advance. Since you complete the introduction and tour in less than an hour, you can zoom on to Verona and spend the rest of the day and evening. Plan to spend a late evening in Verona as you'll want to see as much as you can, including an evening walk. Now, we spent a week in Verona and a week in Venice this summer and felt we barely touched the surface of each city, even after being to both places many times. But a quick intro tour of both is quite doable.
Hello Marge,
While I think it is possible to do both in one day, I would not. I prefer to savor and not rush. Where are you going from Venice? Or from where are you arriving in Venice? As both Padova and Verona are on the way to Venice I think you can spend a night in one or both if you do not mind changing hotels. Venice is very expensive even when compared to Verona. Personally I think two days, perhaps three is all you need in venice. Then I would move on to other cities. Remember, however, that everyone has different passions, so check out all of the guidebooks because you might find that what you think is worth a visit is not, and vice-versa. Also, if you are going in winter know that traveling inland from Venice there can be snow and occasional frigid temps. Happy travels,
Will
