My husband and I will be visiting Venice in a few weeks.
We would like to learn more about the best stores to buy genuine murano glass. I've read that there is some glass called murano glass that is not genuine and don't want to purchase that by mistake.
We've read mixed reviews about buying murano glass on the island of Murano. Some people say it is less expensive to buy in stores located in Venice and others say buy it on the island of Murano.
We appreciate suggestions - thank you very much.
You are wise to be aware and beware regarding Murano glass. Murano glass pieces are individually handmade, hence the price. We bought all our Murano glass from Atmosfera Veneziana in Venice, altho I have been to Murano several times. The shop only sells glass handmade in Murano.
My dear ol' Daddy always said "if you want the real thing, go to the source". If you want to be sure you're getting genuine Murano glass, go to Murano, and buy from a store attached to a glass factory.
If you want cheap, buy it anywhere - maybe it will be genuine, maybe it won't.

I have been told by a few sources (and maybe Rick on TV) that you can often find genuine Murano glass products more affordably in the states than in Venice. I generally trust Rick on sites, on spend, on time (though I add 30-100% to his time estimates depending on the activity), and on prices. I don't trust Rick that much on shopping and food, given our expectations are different. That said, my concern with buying it in Venice, unless I was flying home from Venice, is breakage, especially if I can get it at home.
The website linked above, muranoglass.com is a good reference. There can be fake murano glass on the island of Murano as well and it will not be marked as fake but will generally be much cheaper. I did not really price compare between Venice and Murano, to me part of the experience was buying my Murano glass on Murano! We bought some that was real and some that was most likely fake (and I knew that when I bought it), but it was a style and price that worked for us and either way it makes us smile.
